Transfer Box Identification

Hi there,

I have just had my transfer box blow up and need to replace it, my mechanic has told me the numbers on the transfer case are 0ad 341 011g 485jxf031298nvg . I have found a few transfer cases online those being 0ad341012, 0AD341012D, 0AD341011CX.

My question is are they all interchangeable? as the cases seem identical and if not what are the differences?.

Thanks craig

At the minimum we need to know year and engine. The transfercases have different neck lengths depending on engine. If your current box is 011G, you can only use 011G, any other number (012, 012D, 011CX) is for a different engine.

Parts fun fact: the X modifier in any VW/Audi part number (as in 011CX) indicates a rebuilt item.

After doing a quick search, it seems Touareg transfer cases are somewhat interchangeable. At least, that's what the search results indicate. I got this;

TRANSFER CASE / GEAR BOX 0AD341011L

$400.00

Brand: Genuine / OEM
Compatible Part #s:0AD341011G, 0AD341011, 0AD341012K, 0AD341012F, 0AD341012E, 0AD341011H, 0AD341012T, 0AD341012J, 0AD341012A, 0AD341010S, 0AD341011LX, 0AD341011HX, 0AD341012JX, 0AD341012TX

It was also noted that the above numbers were suitable for the 3.2, 4.2, 4.9V10 engines.

Something else you might consider is in the case of the transmission. it comes out of the car, along with the engine, transfer case, and the front differential. The whole assembly drops out the bottom of the car while the rest of the vehicle is supported.
It might be possible to get the transfer case out without going to all this trouble but that's how the dealer would do it.
It wouldn't hurt to make sure it can be removed separately before you proceed.

His transfercase code is GTK or HAQ, the one you listed (011L) has code GLH or HAU. They are different.

The transfercase is easily removable from the transmission on its own, without having to remove the engine or transmission. The service manual even indicates this, so I'm not sure where you got your incorrect information from. It actually comes out quite easily.

The 011L is the current transfer case version. It is listed as a compatible replacement with the 011G case (according to the part listing) which could be wrong. However, when I Googled the 011G case, the result comes back listing the 011L as the current case. It wouldn't be the first time Google (or myself) made a mistake.
If the case comes out separately, all the better. I just thought it would be a good idea to know the scope of the repair beforehand.
