I have no idea what you're saying. What do you mean "whining"?
Are you saying the motor cranks\spins but it doesn't "fire up"?
Also, if the motor turns over (rotates), but did you replace the battery and starter? An engine needs 3 things to operate.... compression, fuel and spark (in a gasser)...... since you have a diesel, you only need compression, fuel and cranking.... sounds like you're not getting fuel right away.... if your fuel lines are loosing pressure because of a slow leak or something, that might do it.

Yes sorry itís turning over but not catching and continues to turn over ! Then it puts out a lot of diesel smoke ! Battery , and starter are new ! But what could be causing the lack of compression then. ?

If the "suspected" leak is large enough that you can smell diesel, I would guess it should be easy to visually notice. Get under your car and find it.

Where are you in the world?

What is the climate?

Please click on User CP to update your profile.

I'd suspect the glow plugs may not preheating to fire the diesel.

VW Touareg models are as follows:
Generation 1: T1 is model 7LA & facelift T2 is model 7L6
Generation 2: T3 is model 7P5 & facelift T4 is model 7P6
Generation 3: T5 is model CR7 [Not available in "VW Atlas" North America!]
