Need help just ran out of diesel. What to do?

Hey guys I got on the phone didnít realize I was out of fuel pulled in the gas station filled it up with diesel but when I went to crank it up it ran for a minute and then died. Do these vehicles have a primer bulb like some dieselís do? Or am I pretty much screwed?

Well I was lucky. I turned it over for about 5-10 seconds for 4-5 different times and it cranked back up. Almost couldnít believe it but man that was nerve-racking. Back on the road again now and feel fortunate.

There is no primer. You have to use VCDS to run the fuel pump to prime. Or crank and crank and crank and crank until it pressurizes and fills the lines and filter.

That is scary. I drifted into a station when I ran out of fuel and had the same experience. Also I found that the fuel filters clogged up soon after. I was “told” that that is common as the gunk at the bottom of the tank goes through the fuel system and gets trapped in the filter. You may want to replace the filter as a precaution.

NEVER go down below 1/4 full if your car has an HPFP [high pressure fuel pump] unless you want to risk a $16,000 bill to fix it when the pump eats itself and spreads debris throughout the entire fuel system.

The pump relies on cooling unwanted fuel through a small cooler on the return to the tank AND also cooling by the contents of the fuel tank.
