Question CP3 HPFP Failures

As a follow on from the https://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f67/2008-tdi-warning-light-then-silence-259834.html thread

Quote:
the tech claimed that all pumps can fail and the CP3 was not any different to the CP4 in that regard.
OK, so who has had a CP3 pump fail and the reason?

During my research into the failure risks of the CP4 series, I found a number of Diesel Service shops in the USA who were swapping out CP4 pumps and replacing them with CP3's. All the first series T2's using BKS engines run CP3 pumps. It will be interesting to see what responses you get.

I am curios too. Should have made a poll.

I have a CP4 in mine, 105K miles so far. Honestly not sure what makes a CP3 better than a CP4.

Different designs, 2 pistons in the cp4 vs 3 in the cp3. When my Duramax CP3 went out, it did so without any catastrophic damage or issues, just pulled the old and put the new in. By the way the truck was still running and pulling fine a low rpms, it wasn't till higher rpms 2500 and above that the issues showed up. Found that it was only putting out half the pressure to the rails. Drove around with a OBDii code reader to reset the limp mode for 6 months, before working on it. But that was in LB7 duramax

I suppose less heat with 3 pistons. That could make a difference. 2 is working a lot harder.
