Cold Start Help

Hi. Hoping for some advice or guidance. On cold starting my engine spins but does not start for quite a while and when it does there is a large cloud of white smoke. It doesn't quite get to the stage when then battery flattens, but I get the feeling that it's not far off. When the car is running the battery guage tells me that battery is charging and I obviously wait until the glow plug light goes out before turning the key. However, when restarting the car after the initial start it fires after about 2 to 3 turns. There are no issues with performance or fuel consumption. I don't know how old the battery is...it may even be the original. If this is indicative of a failing battery then I'll get a new one before the winter sets in. But if it is something more sinister then I'll need to get it looked at soonest. Thanks for reading. 2008 V6 Diesel Altitude.

I doubt it's your battery as white smoke could be unburnt diesel.

A long time turning over on the first start as the weather is getting colder suggests it may be glow plugs.

Put the car on VCDS - that is always the starting point.

Mine is exactly the same as you described,. I've got a set of. Glow plugs waiting to go in

However, my battery is around 11.5v when I first turn ignition on, which I think. Is issue

I did an overnight charge, the next day it was just over 12v and started instantly

Typically white smoke would indicate unburned fuel on a cold start engine. Could be glow plugs or battery that needs replacing. As suggested get codes read, Id also put a battery charger on it and fully charge then try it again. If it fires right up Id replace battery, how old is the battery now?

General consensus is that the starter is not up the task at around 20 celsius when glowplugs are not used. Any colder and the glowplugs are used so the engine catches easy.
There is a revised 2.2kw starter you can buy from rexbo.eu.

All vw/audi engines must use 507.00 spec oil except non-DPF R5/V10 engines that must use 505.01/506.01
