First, you need to know exactly what you want looked at and/or what you believe is wrong.
Second, you need to explain, specifically, to the service writer what you want looked at, or what you want changed, and that you want an estimate on any parts/repairs/labor on the the items that need fixed/replaced.
Third, you need to tell them that you do not know anything done (replaced/fixed), until you are contacted with the COMPLETE rundown of what is wrong.
Yes, you will have to pay for a diagnostic fee, mechanics labor/time isn't free.
Once you get a list of the "bad news", you then have to make a decision, have the work completed there, at the dealer, or find a comparable idie shop that specializes in VW/Audi/German cars. The indie shop might have reduced labor prices, but from the sounds of it, you don't have the best luck with dealers.
The other option, is order the parts yourself, from a place that specializes in VW/Audi parts, e.g. ECS Tuning, and do the remove/replace yourself.
