Mystery Aftermarket Mod with OBDII Pass Through

For background I purchased a 2011 Hybrid used from a non-VW dealer almost a year ago and for the most part the car has been amazing.

That said I recently got a warning that the hybrid battery was not charging. I took the car to the dealer (rather than my regular mechanic) since anything with the hybrid engine/battery is still covered by the warranty.

Upon inspection the dealer found that there is an aftermarket mod installed that involves being connected to the OBDII port (via a pass through connector). The wire from this connector runs behind the dash.

I asked the dealer for a quote to remove it but they are reluctant to remove/investigate further since they would need to remove the dashboard before having any idea what it could be and thus don't feel comfortable giving a quote for the time/effort involved.

I was hoping that someone here may have some theories about what this could possibly be.

Weird - I'm surprised a previous owner added a mod that would require dashboard removal - that's pretty drastic. It must be something really amazing to go through that effort - I'd want to know what it is too. Any way of tracking down the previous owner?

Find a good auto electronics installer and have him take a look.
1) He might recognize it.
2) He might know how to find the other end without pulling the dash.

Have you done any investigation yourself?

If it just a pass through, unplug it and see what happens. I Am guessing a datalogger, GPS tracker, or ODB data display of some kind.

I'm only commenting so I can follow this mystery. I too bought a used Treg and discovered some anomalies. I tracked down the previous owner and asked. I may have lucked out with all the mods.

Removing the dash sounds pretty drastic, isn't there a way to trace by removing the foot well panels and use a snake cam to get up in there and see. I have never used a snake cam, but home Depot online has them (plumbing). I wonder if you could rent one and how it would work??

I brought the car back home from the dealer last night. I'm going to email the dealer I bought the car from to see if they can contact the former owner on my behalf.

I haven't had a chance to do any investigation yet. I will probably spend some time this weekend taking a look.

I'll post what I see/find.

If they aren't helpful, my carfax report had the previous owners name on it ( and the dealer didn't clean all the receipts out of the owners manual)

Have you just tried disconnecting it from the OBD port? The port is the purple connection located above your feet (if you're sitting in the vehicle).

My guess is that is a wifi or bluetooth adapter to send OBD2 information to smartphone apps like Torque (Torque is an app that converts OBD2 info into digital gauges on your phone and allows the viewing and clearing of codes)

The dealer is likely being lazy, as I highly doubt the dash was ever taken out. My guess is that removal of the lower panels and perhaps the cluster will unveil where this wire is going. I am guessing it will end up at some sort of transceiver.

Can you take a picture of the unit, as that might make it easier to identify.
