Is my 2004 Touareg Multi-port Injection or Direct Injection

I bought my 2004 Touareg V8 (engine code AXQ) with ~111k miles about 3 months ago. Ever since I bought it I have regularly been reading about carbon buildup (especially the one that happens behind the valves) and worrying aboutthe costs involved to get it cleaned. However today I came across a post that mentioned that only the FSI engines (the 2007? and later Touaregs) suffer from carbon buildup. So naturally I tried to search (on google and on this forum) to find out which type of fuel injection the AXQ has, but found nothing. Hence my questions to anyone who knows -

Is my Touareg V8 equipped with Multi-port fuel injection (MPFI) or Direct injection (DI)?

If MPFI, does this mean the truck is unlikely to build up carbon? What precautions should I take to avoid carbon buildup?

Carbon buildup is only a "feature" of direct injection engines (VW calls this FSI).

AFAIK, your engine uses a traditional MPFI (Multi Port Fuel Injection), thus not subject to carbon buildup.

The main thing to worry about on your engine is changing the timing belt, tensioners, water pump and thermostat on time at 80,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first, and, if buying used, either knowing with certainty it's been done and the belt is current or, if you don't know, doing the job ASAP.

VW Touareg models are as follows:
Generation 1: T1 is model 7LA & facelift T2 is model 7L6
Generation 2: T3 is model 7P5 & facelift T4 is model 7P6
Generation 3: T5 is model CR7 [Not available in "VW Atlas" North America!]

@noobytoogy Ok, now I have disclose the full story. I bought the vehicle for $5000 because the owner had receipts for new catalytic converters. After buying it I had the brake job done. The mechanic told me the battery too needed to be replaced. Total cost $900. Having read many posts here, I was full aware of the importance of doing timing belt service but got the chance to drop it off at the shop only last week. Another post here had mentioned that his tensioner guides broke soon after getting the timing-belt job done. So I told my mechanic to open the valve-covers and replace those too.

And that's when things got ugly. The mechanic couldn't access the bottom-side of tensioner on the passenger-side bank and told me he would need to take the cam-shafts out for access. I told him to take out the camshafts on both banks (for extra labor charge of course) and inspect everything. After taking them out, he found a damaged rocker-arm in the driver side bank. One lifter in that rocker-arm is missing and has damaged the accompanied valve stem. To make matters worse, he cannot replace the rocker arm without taking the head off and he cannot take the head off without pulling the engine. A $1500 job has ballooned to $3500+.

And I haven't gotten the transmission fluid replaced yet and have been told that if the tranny fluid was never replaced in my Touareg's 111k miles, the transmission can go bad if I do it now.

A great-running vehicle is turning out to be a nightmare.

That's BS on the transmission fluid change. CHANGE IT OUT. Your tranny will be much happier for it.

And who doesn't love a happy tranny? ;- )

@FSJ+Guy I hope you are right. After getting screwed by the engine, I really can't afford to have the tranny go bad too. What bothers me is that it is already not shifting great. I read many posts here that mention hard shifts when shifting from gear 5 to 4. My tranny does not have that problem but a different one. When I come to a full stop (e.g. at a stop sign) and start moving again after a delay of 1-1.5 seconds, there is a jolt. [I have experienced this issue previously on a Dodge minivan that I once owned. Changing the oil never fixed it. Even rebuilding that tranny didn't fix it although it ran for another 100000 miles without breaking.]

One symptom different in my Touareg (in contrast to the Dodge) is that if I slow down almost to a stop but start moving without completely stopping, there is no jolt.

Shifts in other gears (in my Touareg) are not very smooth either but there are no jolts. I can only think of three possibilities-

- that it is related to the engine not running right. When the engine is fixed, hopefully the tranny will become happy too.

- that it simply needs a transmission oil and filter change service, or

- that there really is something wrong with the transmission and that it is going to break soon. If that happens I'll be screwed again.

But then I only know as much about transmissions as can be known from reading the few posts that I have read here. Have any readers here had this issue with their truck? What was the reason for those jolts?

And most importantly, what course of action should I take regarding the transmission?

I know I am asking too many questions, but I really cannot afford to have the transmission break down on me.

I forgot to mention that hooking up the scanner shows no codes for the transmission. But guess what? It didn't show any codes for the engine either except for an EVAP code (some sort of small leak).

Also, the tranny was shifting fine when I first got the truck. The "jolt upon stopping and moving" issue started more than a month AFTER I got the truck.

For just about ANY trans problem, I always will try a filter and fluid change first. It's the least expensive thing to start with and hopefully will solve the problem.

If not, then perhaps you're looking at a valve body replacement, but have a transmission specialist look at it.

Do a gearbox reset. Takes 10 seconds.

How does one go about this? I get the same jolt on a slow rolling acceleration as well.
