Garage
It's really hard to find,I only have like 5 seconds to find the poping, sure sounds like it's in the cats or intake, definetly sounds like a misfire, but no engine light.

So its back to the dealer today. They have a big list of things to do but hopefully they can narrow it down quickly. My money is still on ignition coils (as one cylinder is missing much more than the others).

I've noticed the past couple of mornings -- we've had lows in the mid/upper 30's -- it has not done it when starting first thing.
But it usually does it going home in the afternoons.

Some news today: They now believe the MAF Sensor is bad, based on the fact that it never goes to a zero state and it erratically measures every so often. The will be replacing that in the morning and see what that does. This explains many of the issues, including the fact that this only occurs for a short time.

I'll send an update once I hear more info!

MAF did nothing. Next they are pulling the intake manifold and valve cover. My guess is they are going after the breather finally, as that is in the valve cover and caused this exact situation in the 3.2l

... well when you get it all figured out, let the rest of us know
Thanks for being the guinea pig -- and sticking with it when the other dealerships seem to have thrown up their hands.

Wish I had better news. Checked with VW yesterday evening. My technicians are about to give up. VW Techline is completely stumped. They did a last ditch valve and air intake cleaning over night (soaking valves and intake to remove carbon). I objected stating that would cause a uniform misfire and my misfire is on cyclinder 4. However, I let them go ahead. When this doesnt work, which it wont, the regional rep will be coming in to look basically deciding to buy it back or new engine.

siberian-
I asked about the tranny yesterday actually. They havent gotten to that work as of yet, because of all the other work occuring. As soon as I hear a resolution to that, you will be the first one to hear, since we made the same mistake!

Appreciate it! Just send the rep over here when you're done with him/her.
