Drive shaft bearing failure

67k on my 2010 touareg and out of nowhere today crazy shake throughout the whole car, especially felt in the arm rest.
Luckily only a few blocks from home; take a climb underneath and sure enough the drive shaft is all wobbly.
Ordered a Vertex bearing support; looks like a good diy.

Pretty easy to install. Majority of work is scraping the rubber off the bearing. I used a carpet knife blade and got it to smooth metal. If you can repack the bearing. I did not replace the rubber flex as mine was in great shape. No cracking or wear. Vertex recommends replacing the flex and provides one with the kit along with new bolts. I previously prepared the bearing and it took less than 15 minutes to install the vertex. Didn't even jack up the car.

well went complete opposite direction; local shop had a complete driveshaft on craigslist today from a customer that returned it, $200.
I canceled the order on the Vertex and already installed the new driveshaft; on my 2010 didn't even have to touch the exhaust to get the shaft out, pretty easy job.

sounds like 84k is great; everything I have read says between 60 and 75k... mine was absolutely fine, no weird sounds or vibration or anything, then boom.

If you grab the shaft behind the carrier bearing it should hardly move side to side or up and down. Mine was fine going to work, stopped two blocks from home to get some cigs and BAM noise in center console before even pulling out of station.

I just ordered mine from Amazon for $369.00 - will be installing in the next week or so for a good insurance policy.
