2006 3.2 v6 BMX Engine code drive train noise

History... 153,000 on the OD, well kept no towing Treg. A little vibration and noise warmed up noticeable when windows up and stereo turned off.

Assumed drive shaft bearing and/or flex joint. Went with the vertex bearing support and new flex joint, replacing both within the last 2 weeks.

Fixed the vibration, bearing support was shot BUT the noise is still there.

Inspected all 4 corner brakes and bearings, appear good.

Now onto front/rear differential and transfer case. Purchased fluids from dealer and will meet up with the local mechanic in the morning panning for gold. Fluid part number for diffs are the same with transfer fluid shown in picture.

Fluids and of course my 4 legged side kick Kadester (American Staffordshire Terrier)

Any recommendations?

More to come...

Marc

Jesnic, running on newer BfGoodrich road force balanced tires. Measured tread depth in 4 different places as they now have just under 4000 miles on them.

Appear to be fine.

Thanks

Marc

Can you explain the noise? High pitch hum when keeping throttle constant would suggest driveshaft/drivetrain harmonics. Low pitch groan would suggest bearing. Variable pitch with throttle would suggest air intake, vacuum, secondary air pump. Groan and or mild chatter with throttle under load would suggest front diff. Loud popping under throttle load would suggest transfer case.

Jesnic

Whatever it is must be warm, rotational sound and is speed sensitive but not high revolutions even at 70 m ph. If I were to guess, early warn bearing on a small shaft. I hear it in the cabin only and can't tell front, center, or rear. Is not a high pitch, and is a low pitch with grinding. once really warm I can hear it all the way to a complete stop.

Tough to describe.

Thanks

Marc

I would be checking wheel bearings again, then driveshaft, then front diff.

Funny you should say that... got the results for front/rear diffs and transfer case. Fluids are clean .

And the mechanic said it is my passenger side bearing. Gotta love local mechanics, no bull, all 3 fluids changed and a diagnosis for $80 bucks. I purchased fluids from VW, transfer was $26 and diffs $27.83 times 3. I feel good they are done, first time as I was following VWs lifetime direction.

Next question, should I do both front bearings, thinking yes and do I use VW parts or let the mechanic order OEM like bearings?

Thanks again

Marc

Doing both sides same time is sensible decision, but it twice the money
