I would change the bad one and wait for the other to go bad. Could get another year or more out of it. No reason to change a part that isn't broken.

Both good advice and appreciate it very much... i am meeting with the mechanic again on Monday to get on his book for service. I will let the dollars speak, if I can get them both done for a reasonable price ~$500, then will do so. If too $$, then I will replace as needed. Heck, he saved me $300 for fluids so far as VW wanted $480. He is local and it is good to help his revenue stream.

I know I can get OEM bearings for about 100.00 per, VW is 172.00 per so I think I will go OEM. I am only looking for another 50 k miles out of this treg then someone else can mod it up for off roading. It will still be in great shape.

Update... replaced passenger side wheel bearing with a FAG wheel bearing kit from parts geek. Did not fix, so I ordered a second bearing kit for drivers side, and is going into local shop on Monday. More to come...

Bearing kit $118+$23 shipping, $200 to install, times TWO. Still reasonable...

Update... replaced driver side wheel bearing, did not fix. UNCLE!

Today, i put the Treg into the dealer, spoke to them around 4, stated the mechanic spent a couple hours trying to diagnose then recommended getting VW involved. With VW running the show now, They are focused on the transfer case looking at the drive chain. I was told that VW has been telling the technician what to do with each step.

Already looking at Trans shops to rebuild if they come back saying I need a new transfer case.

Uggggg. ... this has been one good journey. But love the Treg so not giving up.

I can't believe a transfer case chain couldn't be diagnosed long before now. It is a pretty obvious sound. The chain slaps the case under hard acceleration. It is fairly easy to replace the chain, bearings and seals. If the technician can't diagnose a transfer case chain, do not let them work on it!

The weird thing is I have never experienced a slap noise but only a consistent low grinding noise. The mechanic working on it is the same guy from the time I picked the Treg up new, always had good service so not sure why they feel VW needs to direct the diagnosis unless they plan on paying for it. At t his point I only approved their minimum $110.00 diagnosing fee and know the Treg has been on the lift all day. Will be interesting for sure...

Typically a low, constant grinding noise is the wheel bearings or front diff. You have ruled out bad bearings by having them replaced. The transfer case chain will be very noticeable on hard acceleration and you will hear the chain slacking and popping over the gears. It will gradually get worse over time until you hear it slapping the case and popping over the teeth on the gears. Transfer case repair is fairy simple and not very expensive to rebuild. Parts are available without having to replace the entire transfer case.

That video does not sound like a front diff gear whine at all. It sounds more like a bad bearing and bad bushings.

Just picked the treg up from dealership, their diagnosis is transfer case replacement, but not 100 percent sure.($3500). Heading to a Trans specialist to validate the issue. If reasonable will get r fixed and sell it.

Looking at a 2015 lux in the meantime.
