04 Touareg V8 Weird noise after 30 mph!!!

Hi there,

I`m writing this post because i have a weird noise (groaning / humming) after 30 mph and it gets louder with the incresing of speed, sometimes the noise is there other times isn't. I have checked the car out on a lift but no noise. Made a recording in the car at 65-70mph so please listen to it and if someone has heard the noise or something similar please reply.

Thank you.

Not to get your hopes up, but I had a noise exactly like that and took months to figure out. But my noise was due to the Vertex solution having a thin amount of grease between the main bearing and aluminum casting. The bearing would then rotate inside the casting and make this exact noise (cleaned with brake cleaner and is now gone). If you don't have the Vertex, perhaps center main bearing itself...not the support I am talking about the bearings themselves. Also, it might not make noise on lift, because driveline tension would be gone, but a stethoscope to the main bearing area should still render the noise at a decreased volume...this is similar to how I found mine, but I put my phone on record and then placing under passenger's seat and there the noise was most pronounced... hope this helps...mine did sound like wind or like something stuck in the dash vents, I suspected this for the longest time...

Thank you for your detailed reply.
I don't have the Vertex solution still have the same OME type bearing support, don't know if it was ever changed because I bought the car with 101k couple of months ago.
Did listen whit the stethoscope the bearing but didn't hear any out of the ordynary noise when car on lift, will try to listen again with the car rewd at 40-50mph, hopefully i will hear something.

Wonder if a wheel bearing could be the culprit?

That's were I am thinking it may be from. Somewhere in the drive line as you state that it is speed related. At the very least I would get the oil in your differentials and transfer case checked for metal. The noise sounds like a vacuum leak, that you may find in the engine bay, however this would be very obvious at idle.

Couple odd questions: can you pinpoint where the noise is coming from driving left / right / front / rear or no direction? If you can't tell direction than it is most likely center...
Does turning left or right increase or decrease it? Does braking do anything to intensity or pitch?
Wheel bearings in my experience will change with turning left or right by either diminishing or getting louder...they also seem to need the weight of the vehicle to make noise so it would make sense that it wouldn't make it on the lift...

So problem solved, it was the driveshaft central bearing!
I replaced it yestarday and no more noise, now I'm hoping that i managed to align the driveshaft the right way so i won't have any other wierd or strange noises.
