It was reported by Reuters in January (a credible news source). But I don't think anything more has been said about it since then, nor will anything be said until EPA/CARB are satisfied with the settlement agreement for all TDIs.

Porsche CEO seeks U.S. approval of diesel engine fix in January | Reuters

Porsche is confident it will win approval from U.S. authorities by the end of January for plans to bring its larger diesel models capable of cheating U.S. emissions tests in line with the law, its chief executive said on Tuesday.

Proposals submitted to U.S. environmental authorities in December aim to make 13,000 Cayenne sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) with V6 diesel engines compliant with U.S. rules by replacing catalytic converters and running software updates for 2013 and 2014 model years and with software updates for 2015 and 2016 model years, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said.

"We had a very positive and constructive discussion" when presenting the plans, Blume said in an interview at the Detroit auto show. "The technical aspects have all been submitted, we will wait whether there will still be proposals for corrections by the Americans," he said.

Well, we can go out to full rumor mode here. It was never printed in any respected media source, but...

Initially it was understood that the early gen tdi would be a difficult retrofit and the later gen tdi would just be a software upgrade.

Then we have the quote that you are looking at from Porsche. After that things officially went silent.

The "rumor mill" then exploded with the information that the later gens were not going to be a simple software upgrade. Something along a "Houston, we have a problem" message then radio silence.

In other news, the New England Patriots and Volkswagen have entered into a multi-year branding and marketing campaign.

Dubbed internally as "who says cheaters never win", spokesmen from both the Patriots and VW snickered uncontrollably at the press conference.

To be aired during NFL Prime time broadcasts, the ad campaign will feature notorious cheaters from the world of business and sports/entertainment. The first ad in production includes live shots of Bernie Madoff in his orange jumpsuit holding a placard that reads: #Dieselgate = #Deflategate.

Supermodel Giselle and her husband and Patriots QB Tom Brady will circle Foxborough Stadium in a New Beetle TDI Convertible and distribute $500.00 loyalty incentive cards to any fan who shows their VW key fob.

FWIW the VW scandal is impacting the rest of the industry. MB is delayed in getting certification for their C-class and GLC class diesels due to the added scrutiny of emissions certification on new diesels.

Someone should drive from Stuttgart to Wolfsburg to give the other guy a punch in the nose

The question is, how long will the DPF/ERG last in a tuned vehicle? .
Then those tuners will be fine. The DPF/ERG delete folks? Maybe not so much.

This is actually industry wide for all vehicles. Some industry insider friends who work at design houses for unnamed automakers have reported that EPA was effectively thoroughly embarrassed by the Diesel Gate. EPA has become super hawkish and much more difficult to work with. They sent out letters to all manufacturers where they requested all manufacturers sign a document which states that they do not do anything to circumnavigate EPA testing. None of the manufacturers I know of was willing to sign it with clear conscience. They basically figured if they sign and get caught later, they'll at least sell some cars now; if they don't sign the sales will stop for all cars. VW certainly isn't the sole cheater in the automotive industry and likely, every manufacturer has skeletons in its closet.

MK, great point. The more I read up on the EPA the more I realize it's a load of BS. For instance:

-They set emmissions standards where if a manufacturer can't meet them, they simply buy credits. I am assuming the credits magically clean the air somehow. A legal cheat in essence.
-The standards they set are clearly beyond current technology. I'm not sure if they take last year and reduce 2% and their work is done for the year or ?. Law based on opinion vs reality.
-they set CAFE standards but exempt light trucks from the standard...it makes sense to exclude half the vehicles on a road when calculating a standard I guess? In essence they set a fictitious target and leave the back door wide open for a legal cheat.

The spirit of the EPA is fine, we all want clear air...but don't set up an imaginary set of regulations that are so full of holes that it's tougher to keep track of the back doors vs what they are actually trying to achieve.

So full of holes that even they can't measure their own specs.

Pretty cool how a couple Mountaineers set this whole thing going. Were it not for VW's hubris pre-dating the whole public reveal by more than a year, the EPA would still be looking for a patsy major corporation dumb enough to commit AND admit their own malfeasance.

These EPA guys are the same who - lest we forget - polluted the Durango River at about the same time: "Oops" was the accepted official response, likely because, well, it's easier to be "do as we say, not as we do".

I love the environment and respect it. Nothing makes me more at ease than being in a pristine natural setting. This life form of a 471-thread count of forum pages shows the .00000002 percent of the population affected. Pay the fines and service what you've sold, VW. Tighten up your regulations and truly protect our environment, EPA and CARB. These 90000 engines are not making the onerous and scandalous impact you think it is. Remember, after all, you can't even measure your own shite.

Carry on. June 21st. Summer Solstice. The shadows will align.
