Gearbox reset:

Turn the ignition but do NOT start the car.

Press the accelerator pedal firmly to the floor and hold it there for a full 10 seconds.

Release the pedal, turn the ignition off and remove the key.

The TSB for SWS (yes, steering wheel shake) works for most cars. Since it would only take half an hour to remove and refit all 4 wheels in accordance with the TSB I'd get it done by dealer before trying the car.

Note all 4 tires MUST be IDENTICAL - same size, same make, same model, same tread pattern and no more than 3/32ths tread depth difference between the front and rear axles and no more than 2/32ths difference on the same axle.

VW Touareg models are as follows:
Generation 1: T1 is model 7LA & facelift T2 is model 7L6
Generation 2: T3 is model 7P5 & facelift T4 is model 7P6
Generation 3: T5 is model CR7 [Not available in "VW Atlas" North America!]

Man, that's way easier than the vagcom procedure I found, of which i forgot the steps for while I was there, and just said oh well.

Unfortunately this one isn't at a VW dealer, but a used lot down the road from me. They have no service department/lift. Hopefully I'll be able to beat the guy up on price over all this stuff and come out with a nice car at a really nice price.

Or we end up with one of the 30 TDI Sportwagens at my local vw dealer fresh off the buyback for $10 or $11 stacks, and this thread will be my brief sojourn into the Touareg world. Smart money says get the Sportwagen, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Been poking around on the site, looking at the DIYs, came across the battery replacement procedure, and good Lord! Is everything a giant pain in the ass on these? I'm a bit of a glutton for punishment as I've owned nothing but VWs for the last dozen years, but still I'm starting to get gun shy on these Touaregs.

Dude in the diy said it took him an hour? What do I know?
But thanks for setting me straight. Seems like a really cool helpful board here.

That should have booked out at around 15 hours and actually took the better part of two weeks. If you're God with the way back machine you might be able to find the thread on stlvw.org. Same user name.

And I'm not saying I'm scared to change a battery, I'm saying most cars don't have a 27 step diy for doing it. I was just asking how big of a hassle Touaregs are in general.
