DIY: Parking Brake Handle Replacement - T1/T2 models

Skill required: shamefully little
Parts: 7L6-711-878-F
Tools: Needle nose pliers, flat head screwdriver (optional), clean microfiber rag
Time: 5 minutes (and that's if you are having trouble opening your beer first)
Beer: Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier Naturtrüb or a German beverage of your choosing

If lower kick trim panel is removed, reach behind dash and push out the remainder of the parking brake handle, just as you have been doing for the previous eight months since the handle broke off. If lower kick trim panel is still in place, gently pry handle out using a screw driver until you can pull it out with your fingers. You may have to put your beer down for this.

Keep the replacement handle within reach. With the handle out note the silver ball cable stay. Grab this stay with a pair or needle node pliers while sliding the handle back into the dash. The cable should disengage from the catch but may need a gentle tug down. Pull cable out slightly and down while pulling the old handle completely out. Set this next to your beer. Insert the new handle assembly in enough to pull the cable stay up and into the catch. Pull handle out to seat the cable. Test. Retrieve beer from the storage position, use rag to gently soak up any spill or condensation. Use the remaining three minutes you allocated to the task polish the center console with the rag.

Thanks for the instructions and photos, a great help. Did it without the beer unfortunately. I found grabbing the ball with the pliers a little fiddly, but otherwise it is as straightforward as you say.

VW dealer here in Perth charged AUD$67 for the spare part. Ridiculous!

Can all Touareg repairs be done with a beer in one hand and your tool in the other?
