T3 Car Camping Mods/Set up

Let me preface this by saying I have searched for this here, but could not locate it. If this has already been discussed, please point me to it.

Wife and I do a lot of car camping with our 2 dogs and mainly use our Yakima SkyRise rooftop tent. Looking for recommendations for a car camping set up without towing anything; anything from awning to camp kitchen storage.

Thanks!

The previous Administrator, Loz, on myTreg forums used to do trips to hot sunny places with a roof tent on his T3 and posted about them and the kit several times.

VW Touareg models are as follows:
Generation 1: T1 is model 7LA & facelift T2 is model 7L6
Generation 2: T3 is model 7P5 & facelift T4 is model 7P6
Generation 3: T5 is model CR7 [Not available in "VW Atlas" North America!]

How does the crossbars handle the weight of the tent and occupants? Theyre only rated for 100kg

The straight forward answer is that there are two types of weight loading capacities for roof racks.
These are the Static Weight Loading Capacity and Dynamic Weight Loading Capacity.
Dynamic: when your vehicle is in motion --------- usually specified by vehicle manufacturer and is usually around 60kg for small / medium vehicles

Static: when your vehicle is parked ---------- I have not seen this specified by car manufacturers but some roof rack manufacturers might specify it for the racks that they supply and I have read somewhere that the rule of thumb is 3 times the dynamic load.
But if you and your RT tent fall through your sunroof and end up sleeping in the car, then I guess I might be wrong.

On the A7 we had the Audi branded roof rack, which I believe is made by Thule. It held up great. I'm 6ft 210 and my wife is 5 10, 140.

the tent alone is about 65 pounds

I have ordered Yakima Jetstream crossbars for the Treg. Yakima said the M crossbars hold up to 600 pounds static.

I wonder what the static weight rating is for factory crossbars. The sticker says 100kg but doesn't specify static or dynamic.

A reasonable assumption is that it relates to the dynamic weight as that is where the danger/risk to others lies.

There are some Cayenne builds on the OverlandExpo forums that might give you some ideas! I haven't seen many T3s set up for camping either, but I'm sure it can be done. I'd love to figure out an economical and removable storage system for the trunk area. Slides/drawers would be great but they're expensive, heavy, and make accessing the adblue tank a pain. Some flat storage totes would be ideal, but I haven't found any heavy duty ones, a la Action Packers; all the ones designed for under bed storage are cheap plastic and will crack if you stack anything on top. Curious to see what you come up with!
