I got sick of the '90s Toyota walnut and went this route as well. 3M makes some really nice material! I went with matte "dark tamo" wood grain.

what a great simple mod. Going to do this myself. I like the dark wood and the charcoal OP used.

1 M^2 was way more than enough! Vinyl typically comes in 1 M wide rolls and gets sold in increments of 1 M, so that was the smallest option. If you're using a wood grain pattern, make sure you lay it out so that everything fits with the grain all going one direction.

Hey everyone, 2016 TDI Lux here and this thread inspired me! I took on this project and completed the install this weekend.

I took my time and was VERY careful.

However, I'm looking for your help. After plugging back in the components I am seeing two issues

1. I can no longer see what gear i'm in on the center console, it's fine up on the gauges display... However, down on the gear selector it's like there's no power to the "backlight" for the gear selector "gates".

2. When I startup the car, it says "ARS Traction Control Disabled, Front assist not available" then clears itself and enables both features after about 10seconds. The Traction Control button does not illuminate and is not turning on and off Traction Control anymore. Also, during my drive to work this morning this popped on the displayed error'n then clearing itself again after a few seconds elapsed.

Again, I am very meticulous. I took my time and was very careful with all components not to overstretch wire looms or force connectors. All modules were carefully removed and stored while the panel was wrapped to prevent heat gun exposure etc. After re-installing, my first thought was a loose connector, but I confirmed all are tight and properly installed. Part of me wonders if there's a fuse that went out... but two? Something is haywire here...

I plan to run VCDS self-diagnostics today but I have to say I'm pretty disappointed that after carefully unplugging and re-plugging the connectors after completing the wrap, I have 2 issues. I wasn't worried at first as in my opinion and experience with other vehicles, are quickly resolved with a found loose connector... that was NOT the case, sadly.. Do these connectors have to be plugged in, in a certain order that only German's know?

Anyone else run into issues with their late model Touareg during the wrap/re-install process?

:fingerscrossed you all have some ideas, thanks in advance for any ideas you would like to share.

*Update*

During my drive home today and while re-evaluating the potential causes, I went back to the basics again and closely inspected each connector. Why would two of these components be malfunctioning at the same time...?

You guessed it, as it turns out, both the shifter "status indicator" and the Traction Control Switch/Module have the exact same 10pin connector with enough slack to plug into each other, improperly. As it's not easy to see underneath until you start unplugging a couple of these connections initially, it's easy mixup these connections when hooking things back up. The Traction Control Switch/Module is a 10pin but only has 4 wires. The shifter has a full connector. As it's just an LED status light it seems like it would take less wires, but that is not the case. My guess is that since it communicates back to the transmission to see what gear is engaged including manual mode etc. many more wires that I would have expected are needed to "feed" it.

TL;DR - Shifter and Traction Button take the same 10pin connector on the center console panel. Ensure the connector with less wires (4) is connected to the Traction Control Button if you have issues upon re-assembly. I wanted to post in case anyone else runs into the same issue.
