Question What is offensive?

I would like members to compile a list of certain 'words' that, in their culture, may find offensive to use on CT threads. Silly? Not sure if it is. I've noted that today, I used the word, "Jap", and one US member found it offensive. Is "Jap" offensive? Is being called a "Yank" offensive? I've found the use of words spoken or written in a certain context offensive/not offensive.

I have no desire to introduce any political correctness here. The world has been smothered by it. I do, however, understand some people may draw offence. Me, I don't get easily offended. Mostly, it's "water off a ducks back".

Probably not too practical attempting to compile a list of offensive words on a forum. It would quickly degrade into an excuse to post every racist slur under the sun. Most forum software will automatically filter out seriously offensive words anyway. (don't know about this forum )

Here's a good compilation of words to avoid.

Agree that political correctness has got out of hand. We need to understand that people from different cultures and age groups can have very different views on what is acceptible. When someone accidently offends they will usually offer an immediate apology. It is up to the other party to accept this apology and move on.

thats funny!

"COON" here in aus... there are ads on TV, marketing campaigns in the print media for "COON" cheese

here is the web site Enjoy COON at breakfast, lunch, dinner, slice it for sandwiches, melt it in jaffles or toasties

common sense should prevail... some things in life are just innocent!! and we should not have 'do gooders' turn nice into evil and run over the silent majority

for the record i own a jap car... it means it was made in japan, nothing more...

I have never been wealthy enough to be offended!... Oils, doing this would just give some morally constipated bigot something to bitch about... Hey I resemble that remark...funny about that... Seriously aren't we above all this? I thought this was a forum about cars and how to enjoy them.. People "take" offense rather than people "give" offense.. As long at it is not directed and intentional who would really care... Not this black duck (or any other low spectral reflected game bird! )..

As simple as ABC

My wife is called Ann

I eat an apple

Aunt Sally is a game of skittles in the pub

I eat a banana

I wear a beanie

My washing machinre is a Bosch

I sit on the bog

I gave my helpful neighbour a bung

My Labrador dog is a breed

I eat a Bounty Bar

My daughter was a Brownie

My son is Charlie

I saw a chink of light

I chug along

I crack a coconut

At Christmas I pull a cracker

This morning I shot a crow

And according to Wikipedia I have now offended folk right around the world using everyday words in their correct context in the English language, and I have only got as far as ABC!

What a load of utter bollocks!

At times like this, I'm glad I'm an Aussie, live here (as in Oz) and I know what part of the planet I live on........the best part it seems!! Even the [email protected]@dy Union Jack has a place here, along with the refo's, Kiwi's and the rest of the planet that chooses to call this place 'home'. "Water off a ducks back"; seems to work alright then.

Nooby, you could almost become an Aussie with your wit. My kind of wit.

And for the record:

COON Cheese | 100% natural, COON Tasty, COON Extra Tasty, COON Light & Tasty, COON Colby, COON Swiss

look, it's actually white! Same as my Gerry Passat and Jap Navara....in a respectful context.

None of these raise a red flag in my mind, but use of the short form word "jap" would tag a speaker here in the US as at least déclassé, or as a bigot, depending on crowd and circumstance... If your parents or grandparents had spent time in an American internment camp, I imagine as a natural born American of Japanese decent you'd see it differently... But I'm assuming this based upon my age and experience. I could be wrong... One sets one self apart by ones speech and habits. This is largely an exercise in language and social decorum. My view from this side of the pond.
