torque converter fix or trade in?

Stupidly bohg ta touareg a month ago to discover the torque converter and solenoid valve gone. Brand new Torque converter is £3500. have been advised by a mechanic to replace whole gear box as the metal from the torgue converter will have gone through the gear box. I have been given a quote for reconditioned gear box and fit £3500. Bought the car for £7500. Dou you think its worth saving? Don't really have the money!

Tbh i have never heard of a gearbox needing to be replaced due to a torque converter being faulty.Even VW themselves would not recommend this when a new converter is fitted.

Torque converters do not break up inside the box so im not sure who advised you need a new box.

What kind of warrenty are they offering for 3500 pounds as a recon box will not have a new converter (which is your current problem already) and will go again before the actual gearbox itself

As for trading it in,you will be losing a great deal of money and a faulty converter is not something that does not notice due to the noise it makes

See if you can source a converter and solenoid and find a good mechanic to fit rather than a main dealer and save yourself a fortune.Once its up and running you will be glad you kept it

This is THE place for you to take your car.

They have been highly rated by a lot of folk for a long time and have been known to fix problems far more cheaply than other garages who just want to swap out one box for another without regard for yuor wallet.

Have you found the UK Treg site? www.mytreg.com

There's a lot more experience on there with the 2.5.

By conicidence this popped up on www.mytreg.com tonight:

Torque Converter 09D 323 571 (EXL/GLJ/HAM) - myTreg forums

Can't vouch for the seller or whether it would fit your car . . . if you really need one.

Thanks guys

Still feeling a bit burnt and going to see what i will be offered for a trade.
The person who advised me is a mechanic for VW, who gave me this advice independently.

Try King's. You might save yourself a forutne. Give them a ring, whatever, but please get a second opinion on your mechanic's diagnosis.
