I just got my 2008 Touareg delivered

Hello, my name is sebastian and aim from sweden, just a few days ago I got my new Touareg 2008 delivered which replaced my 08 RR Sport, a car that I loved but I felt it was time for a change.

Aim also the manager of one of the largest VW dealers here in Sthlm so I felt it was time for a slight update (I will also get my Passat CC delivered next week sometime). I have only owned the car for two days and have not really got any chance to try it out yet.

I did choose a rather unusual spec for my Touareg, choosed to put the spare tire on the booth, very ugly according to some, I love that look personally, looks far to dull without it.

Congratulations for your new T-reg. Looks very nice (for my taste). I like the tyre on the booth

re: spare mount

Hi Sebastian, I first saw one of those mounts in Amsterdam. I shipped my 08 from the USA and have it in Mallorca but will be moving to Sweden next year and plan to keep the vehicle for many years to come. Do you think I could retro fit the hatchmount like you have? What tyres are you running for winter? I also need a towing hook fitted, is it the same size throughout Europe? Last Q: is your car WhiteGold or Silver? Mine is WhiteGold.

Lets compare notes and do a run sometime in Sweden! Har det bra!

Great Touareg Sebastian!
I've got a spare carrier as well, and it just doesn't look as good without it

Can be done, but will cost you an arm and a leg. The mounting points for the swing arm is standard on all Tregs, but you need to change the rear hatch itself. It has a huge round recess behind the tyre. Last I heard you're looking at about 3,000 for a new unpainted hatch. Also, you'll need to change the rear bumper as it has a cut-out for the swing arm mounting and a relocated number plate mounting/light. Then you'd also have to do the electrics. The swing arm also has an electronic locking mechanism, similar to the push-button one on the hatch which, I assume, interfaces with the alarm.

So in short, big job, but anything's possible with enough time and money...

Relocated to Aus. Starting fresh.

Tow hook is the same thoughout europe.

I would get a roofrack and mount the tire up top
You could also keep your US hitch (I believe you can get an adaptor with the right size ball for towing) and get a square tube set upo to mount a spare on the rear, kind of like a bike rack

Wow! That's a lot of work and a waste of a perfectly good hatch .. I think I'll just get THULE box on the roof and mount the spare inside it. That's the least cosmetically permanent solution. You could actually get the donut in there too, which free's up the space needed for an alternative LPG or CNG fuel tank. Great comments here, It's going to be interesting to see where all this goes and to see pictures of the results!
