Spring blizzard = first vehicle recovery

While everyone was whining about the snow today, I knew it would eventually mean an unlucky friend with FWD / RWD would need help getting out from a slushy, snowy mess. My wife and I just got back from pulling my buddy's little Chevy Cobalt out from a stuck embankment blocking his apartment's entire parking ramp.

Fun stuff! Didn't remember to take a photo amidst the "Field Marshall" work. It would have been even better with dedicated winter tires.

Anyone else help pull someone out today?

  • 2007 VW Touareg V10 TDI (black exterior/teak cricket leather; rear diff locker, tow package) [wife's daily driver]
  • 2010 BMW 335d (M-sport package) [my daily driver]
  • 1990 Volvo 740 GL sedan (5-speed M/T) [~330,000 miles with original transmission + engine]

Looks like the Varykino hideout scene, in the Ural Mountains, from Dr. Zhivago, outside my Minnesota hut this morning. Took off the winter tires two weeks ago only to get 10 to 12 inches of wet snow yesterday and overnight. The Goodyear Eagle F1s are definitely a summer tire, but the Treg had no problem going up the hills around here.

Didn't pull anyone out, but the drive home last night sure sucked. As for tires, my WRG2's performed awesome. Slush was so deep is spots though, that I occasionally wished for narrower tires. It was fun sledding around on the roads - got it WAY out of shape once, on purpose, but it was a good reminder (again) of the mass of a 5000+ lb vehicle.

As for the snow.... Make it stop! I want green grass and trees with leaves, and a lake to fish on.

Current:
2014 TDI Exec - White w/ Cornsilk

Gone to a great new home:
2008 V6 Cranberry Red - Lux Plus (Leather, Keyless) Tech + Dynaudio, Air, Tow, 4 Zone Climate

I switched to the stock 20" Conti on Tuesday so gave them a run in the past 24 hours. They weren't too bad but it does prove the winter 18" tire/wheel set is a much better option. Starting out traction was fine but turning stopping was diminished with the Conti. The most interesting was making a lane change later in the evening the stability control came on due to the tires floating over the slush. Never had that happen with the winter tires. So my recommendation would to not run the 20" oem tires in areas where winter sets in for 6 months like MN.

“April freezing showers don’t bring May flowers”. This was the MN rhyme of the last weekend. It aggravates my poetical skills to come up with something more or less sound starting with “April blizzards bring May… what?”
