Loud knocking sound

I hope I can get some ideas of what is going on with my vehicle, I have a 2008 touareg, I was driving home from work and out of nowhere this loud noise almost like someone knocking at a door started, at first it looked like it was from underneath the passenger side and then felt like it was coming from the middle, not sure about that, I stopped to check my tires but those seemed to be fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Do a search on "drive train center carrier failure" any post by noobytoogy will suffice... 5 years or 60 k miles, preventative maintenance item. $1500 at a dealership, or other options.

Search is your friend, under the maintenance section.

Niner - thank you. Now please write all my posts!

Yes, Sammy, it's the centre bearing gone . . . don't drive it except to the workshop to get it fixed and if it starts knocking very loudly, stop and get the flat bed recovery truck out to it or you might damage the expensive transmission.

Even though you already own your car, have a read through this so you know what else might be coming your way:

Thank you! I'll be calling the shop to get it fix, I was hoping for just some problems with my tires.

I hope you have researched the options from $80 DIY to nigh-on two grand at the VW dealer . . . unless you have a warranty company picking up the tab.

It's the large rubber Bushing around the driveshaft bearing, just had mine replace @ 83000 miles at dealer $1200. They said you have to replace the entire driveshaft.Common on Touaregs and Cayennes.

You're picking up on an old thread.

We know dealers replace the entire shaft. However you can just replace the bearing itself if you know how, or get the shaft refurbished and, yes, we know it's common on Touaregs and Cayennes which is why there are so many threads about the drive [prop] shaft!
