2013 trailer hitch wiring......

I installed a CURT PN 56201 trailer hitch wiring harness per "E Trailer" video (YouTube DIY video) on my new 2013 Touareg TDI. I found that it does not work dependably. When using LED trailer lights it quits functioning after applying a turn signal, brake or running lights. After talking with the VW dealer, Fletcher Jones VW in Chicago, this phenomenon happens due to the low current draw that the Treg electrical system sees when hooked up LED trailer lights. This ends up with the Treg electrical system shutting down to protect itself. Turn the car off then the system resets and you have lights only temporarily again, the same thing then the same happens all over. Again, LED trailer lights are the culprit. Talked with CURT Technical (Mike) and they did not seem to be aware of the issue. VW indicated that their $1000 hitch harness would remedy the situation. I am still noodling on the issue myself, ~$50 or ~$1000, hmmmmmm..... Maybe going to try an inline resistor to emulate incandescent bulbs when using LED trailer lights. Right now I have a temp pair of trailer lights with magnetic bases in use. Be careful, itís hard to buy these type units without LED lights, seems to be the norm now. The only problem with these is you don't have side marker lights in use.

Check out this adapter on etrailer.com. Part # TR20141. This may be what you need.

looked over etrailer plug recommendation

Already have a 4-way coming from TReg via the CURT trailer harness. Due to the new wave use of single wiring for turn/brake/running lights for the rear lights, it is the low voltage requirement of the LED's (per the VW dealer) that throws the TReg brain into a tizzy...... learning more as I ask, listen and read on the issue.
