Quite a bit since you are due for a new timing belt (due to age)

why would a car that has only 20k miles need a timing belt?

Belts deteriorate with age, and so do tires.

20k new timing belt?? Then i must be waaaay overdue. My understanding that the timing belts are changed at 80k. I have an 05 V8 Touareg as well and i'm due for a timing belt change along with the water pump. There's a kit that you can get through ebay or sites for about $400.00 and have your VW certified mechanic install it for you or go to the stealer and have them do the job. If you have the dealer do it, they order the parts and install it. They wont take parts you bought outside of their shop.
Im actually due for service and was quoted $1,400.00 by the dealer. My truck is already at 85k.

VW Germany's guidance on timing belts has changed from mileage only to time or mileage.

This hasn't necessarily filtered down to the dealers by the way but then quite a few of them don't seem to be up to much anyway!

Some VW Group cars are on 40,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first.

Best practice on the Touareg is 80,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first, just as Porsche recommend too.

Despite what some folk say, these belts do deteriorate with age.

They may often look good until removed, turned inside out and bent over into an acute curve whereupon quite often many hairline cracks will be observed.

You MUST also change the thermostat and the water pump at the same time. Some people have cheap-skated on this and been caught out.

I totally agree!!! Thats why im getting the full kit which includes everything.
You can't be cheap on these cars....They are too expensive!!

I don't drive my car as often like other do around here but i sometimes wonder if i had made the right choice. Coming from a ford, I have to say, i like how these cars handle and run. But when it comes to repairs, theres no break on the wallet. I was actually thinking of getting a lexus before my treg but at the time, Toyota was getting a bad rep for braking issues..recalls.. so i moved away from that and came across this truck. It was my first foreign try ever owned!
I'm just hoping my treg keeps going for a few years longer or at least until i finish paying it off....
