t3 tdi grinding vibration when turning right only.

I have a grinding sound and feeling from floor to steering wheel that only happens when i make a 90 degree right turn. It seems to be worse when engine is cold, but will still happen when warm. If I make two right turns back to back it will only grind/vibrate on first right turn, but second right turn will be fine. Then after awhile if I make another right turn the vibration on a 90 degree right turn will happen again. At low speeds vibration is very noticeable. At high speeds not so much. Left turns have no vibration at all.

Any thoughts?

Jeez - I thought I was high miles on my '14 with 76k. Well done!

What you describe sounds a lot like a CV boot (driveshaft boot). There are two on each shaft - one near the wheel hub and one near the front dif. It's usually the wheel side ones that tear. When they do go, you will usually see a bunch of grease in the wheel well too. I would start there.

I have the same, or very similar, issue on my '14 TDI. Only on right turns. I visually inspected my CV's and didn't see anything. To me it feels like a differential problem. I also have a slight pull to the right that hasn't gone away after new tires and 2 alignments. I'm starting to think the pull is related to the differential.

At very low speeds and at or near full lock on the steering, the grinding (felt more than heard) is the electronic differential - which I believe actually works by pulsing the brakes. If its new, louder, etc, then there is something wrong somewhere.

I had something like this on my 2014 at around 25K miles. VW replaced my steering column under warranty. I have had no problems with the steering column since. I am now at 49K miles.

For me I don't notice in the steering wheel. I feel it in the floor and hear it.

I have this on my '15. Feel a slight grinding through the steering wheel when close to full lock (usually right) at low speeds. I mentioned it to the dealer and of course, they couldn't reproduce it.

This may not be the same but I had mine in for a 55000km service this week and asked them to check my front end as I had been experiencing occasional pulsing through the steering wheel and the odd little groan. Always first thing in the morning, rarely any other time, usually faint but now after a few weeks becoming more pronounced. (Also always on a right hand turn as I reversed out of the garage each morning.) On the way to the service it happened moving forwards on a right hand turn at an intersection and I felt strong pulse, pulse, pulse, pulse, pulse as I rounded the turn.

Tech discovered power steering fluid was low. He topped it up and since then (two days) no more symptoms. He did mention other - expensive - problems can be experienced with the steering but hopefully I've got off lightly. Of course I'm wondering why it was low.

Anyway check the power steering fluid level.

Good tip. I just checked my fluid and it is at MIN. So, I ordered some of the special CHF 11s stuff on Amazon. It would be great if it's that easy!

My 2016 has this feature, the only niggling fault in an otherwise fine machine (not counting the additional post-TDI fix coarseness). In my T1 days, the stepper motor would be suspected for grinding/hopping in flow speed maneuvers, but this is less severe...occurs momentarily, mid-way through a right hand turn. Been doing it for awhile, more noticeable now.

Without a warranty, I’ll just observe for now
