2006 Owners: Alert About Front Brakes
So, I'm talking to Geoff at Alretta Truck Parts. He called me today to alert me about something he discovered on V6 equipped TOUAREGs that are 2006 model year vehicles.
He has a customer with a 30xxx VIN that has front brake calipers that are only 4-piston units -- similar to what has been found on the 2007 models. Geoff says the brake code on that customer's vehicle is a 1LE and it's a new, smaller type of brake pad.
The six piston caliper is brake code 1LC. Geoff called me because he just shipped out a brake set too me, so I went to check my vehicle. I have the 1LC code and the six piston caliper, but yet my vehicle is 46xxx VIN. This is freakin' strange.
THE ROTOR SIZE IS STILL THE SAME AND IS NOT IMPACTED BY THIS CHANGE.
Anyhow, apparently the new brakes (the smaller padded ones) are the same ones used on the Aston Martin DB9, a couple of Ferrari models and a Lamborghini model. So, the upside is, if you have the 2007MY TOUAREG and were thinking your brakes aren't as good as the old 6-piston... they are apparently good enough for those cars.
Bottom line here: I'm contacting my sources at VWoA to find out what is going on with this. Also, if you have a 2006 V6, when you go to replace your brakes, check for that 1LC or the 1LE product code. It will be on the tag in the rear of the vehicle where the spare is kept.
If you have the 1LE code, the bad news is, right now those pads are only available through a dealer and not via the aftermarket --- at least for now.
