"Noise" while driving

Hello everyone,

For the past 1'000 - 2'000km I've had a slight grinding (for lack of a better word!) noise coming from the front right of the car. It seems to increase at higher speeds and is almost inaudible at low speeds. Seems to be neither the engine or the gear box (tested the latter by putting the car into neutral at speed and the noise didn't change). The noise seems to be increasing as I put my km on.

Any idea what it might be? Thanks!

Best,
VD-10

It's a '04 V10 with 230'000km.

if you turn to right does the noise get less noticeable? I would jack up the front right and grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock the wheel to see if there is any play. if not spin the wheel by hand as fast as you can while holding the spring with your other hand and see if you can feel vibration in the spring. if you feel vibration or wheel rocks i would say wheel bearing. If not could be scale build up on rotor check pad surfaces and if there is rust there you may need to replace rotor and clean slides and brackets so your pads move freely

Exactly what I thought - the wheel bearing(s). I'm on a road trip right now, and will be home next week. Will be sure to give your suggestion a try.

Have you also dealt with the same issue?

And yes, it's more of a whining and droning noise. Will keep you posted.

You can usually tell if it's a wheel bearing by swerving smoothly from side to side in an slalom pattern..... as the weight transfers and each side unloads, the noise should lessen.....

It could also be the centre bearing support. Mine initially sounded like the engine was "chittering", and it sounded like it was coming from the front right. Upon closer inspection of the bearing support, I noticed the rubber was cracked and the shaft was moving a fair bit. After replacing with the Vertex support, the sound never returned. Be sure to check yours - you can roll under the car fairly easily to see it, especially with the air suspension at the highest setting.

The noise got A LOT worse, you mostly hear during acceleration.

Noise emanates from the front right of the car. It's not the wheel bearings. Could still be the brakes since they're completed worn, but that's not the most logical conclusion.

I suspect the problem is actually my front diff. Will do an oil change and check the color of what comes out...

Turbo? Try running a turbo adaptation in VCDS, and if you get the same noise during that while the car is stationary, then it will be obvious what's causing that!

The V10 has two ECUs, one for each 5-cylinder side of the V setup, and diagnostics can be run on them separately. This also includes the two turbos. And even if he couldn't run the diagnostics separately, he knows which side the noise is coming from. And all that's needed is the confirmation whether it's a spooling (worn) turbo that's making the noise or not, anyway.
