V8 automatic hard down and up shifts

This is a well used and abused Touareg. It recently started to do clunck down shifts and up shifts, quite erratic sometimes when under hard acceleration when over taking. Any ideas where to start?
Cheers, Rod.

first thing i think to do is tranny reset,

put the key and turn the ignition but do not start the car,

then press the accelerator pedal all the way and hold for 15 seconds,

turn off the ignition and release the pedal,

now the tranny will be on raw stetting and it will adapt to your driving style

if this will not help you need to check oil level and if its not been ever changed you need to change oil and filter, also temperature valve needs to be checked and if its functioning properly you dont need to change it

Okay, thanks for the tip, will try and get back to you. New to this machine, pretty competent mechanic for an electronics guy but all modern cars have strange Idiosyncrasies. Will take sometime to get to know the ins and outs, thanks.
Cheers, Rod. By the way I'm in Douala, Cameroon.

Have the timing belt, thermostat, water pump and tensioners ever been changed?

That I don't know, bought this car on the usual import route here in Douala, no log book, spare tyre, jack, pump, one key, wipers not working properly. (Took that apart and discovered some idiot had tried to weld cast ally, no can do.) So having taken a look at the T belt, I have brought in from the States a T kit with all the bearing, W pump, theromo, tensioner Etc. Bought the cam locking bar too. But what would the T belt have to do with harsh auto gear changes?

The Valve body is most likely stuffed, common problem, the trans flairs when up shifting etc.. do a search.

2004 V8 / Air suspension / lowering module / 4 zone climate / Nappa leather / Xenon lights / sunroof / HR tow / rear tub and cargo barrier and mats / rear diff lock / 19 summer and 18 inch winter wheels / racks / Porsche muffler with V10 tips / 120,000 km's and spotless . ECU upgrade next.

noobytoogy,
Now understand your thinking having just gone back and read nicoloz's links. Here in Douala it's 25-28C all year round so I will disconnect the long/short valve on the transmission as I suspect it has failed on the short route. Hopefully I have not damaged the transmission. Will carry out a tranny oil change though as suspect this poor machine has lead a hard life so far. Thanks to you both for all the tips very much appreciated.

Sorry my post wasn't clear.

The timing belt has nothing at all to do with your gearbox problems.

I was just looking at the age of the car and thinking "I hope the timing belt, etcetera, has been done", hence my post.

But you have obviously got that in hand.

Have you done the gearbox reset yet? Only takes 30 seconds...
