Copmpression test was done not long ago, around 270k. I forget the actual numbers but all was within spec and uniform across all cylinders. It is starting to use some oil, about 1 qt every 1,000 miles, but I think that's from valve seals. Last Blackstone was done at 256k with good readings. I haven't had it done since because I figure I've reached the point of diminished return on that.

To get a 0w, you must have some PAO or ester based oil stock in the product. Please correct me if I am wrong on this particular weight and grade of 0w-40 mobil 1 oil product. 5w is doable with group III hydrocracked, but 0w is questionable. Then the ability to go from a 0w to a 40w when warm is another feature only a full synthetic is capable of , range wise, with a fair amount of viscosity index improver added.

Anyone that has run recent batches of this oil through a lab test after 10 or 15,000 miles between oil changes will also tell you that this oil has not lost any viscosity or broken down any of it's shear values, another property of a true PAO motor oil.

What you say may be true of other Mobil 1 synthetic motor oils, but that 0w feature is a sure product identifier of a true full synthetic in the base stock.

As an aside, ANY motor oil made in Germany that claims Full Synthetic technology motor oil must be group IV or group V based oil stock, no group III is allowed. Which is why folks specify 0w -30 Castrol Green Made in Germany Syntec. There again, there is no question it is full PAO and or Ester based full synthetic motor oil. The 0w is the dead giveaway, as well as the made in Germany.
Wrong, M1 0w-40 is a group III base oil with strong additive package and possibly very small percentage of group IV. There is a lot of discussions going on at BITOG. Also "Made in Germany" and made FOR Germany are two different things. Germany seems to be the only country which enforces the law of "Synthetic". If you want a true group IV oil you'll have to go to Amsoil, Redline or Lubro Moly (0w-40 only, in US), even a Motul that I am using is a blend of group III, IV and some V. It is much cheaper for manufacturers to hydrocrack group III and add strong additive pack to bring it up to group IV level than produce it from Poly-alpha-olifin (PAO). Mobil used to make their 0w-40 from PAO but around 2 or 3 years ago switched to hydrocracking probably to stay competitive and rack in more profits since the price stayed the same and production costs went significantly down.

Please kindly provide your Mobil source of this information, via a website or official document on this particular USA version Mobil 1 0w-40 being group III based.

Thanking you in advance.

I am no chemist nor am I an oil expert but I probably know a bit more than a regular Joe. As I suggested earlier BITOG is a good place to start, plenty of discussions on M1 0w-40. A lot of good info there.

RE what T-Reguan wrote concerning some Motul products, and even the M1 0w-40 in question here, perhaps we shouldn't be so stuck on what Group the oil is in, since blending of the base stocks and all other additives is what is important, and therefore a well blended oil will be optimum for a given application that it was intended for.

For example, I have many times in the past(not here though) stated the attributes of Esters and PAO's, and really knocked hydrocracked Group 3 oils, but yet, the Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40 that I'm now using in the Touareg, is purportedly a Group 3-4 and with a dash of Ester, Group 5 oil!

Ok, I will call Motul up tomorrow and ask, lets put all this down on the table once and for all. But I ain't calling Mobil......too corporate for me , so someone else go ahead and report back.

I find this thread amusing, Who has had a good talk with his or her engine lately? You find out which oil is better when one fails, and then it's too late. Maybe the thread should be who's engine failed on which oil. If you use a recommended oil I would venture they all do their job. Sorry, but I find it hard to worry too much about it. JP

Disclaimer - I am not an Amsoil dealer but I do buy from them sometimes and I recently received an email stating that they now have three varieties of their European Car oil formula.

Full SAPS
Mid SAPS
Low SAPS

Apparently the mid and low SAPS are supposed to be better formulated for diesel engines.

Go on with your discussion now, as I enjoy reading the opinions and learning more about this stuff.

Actuuuuuaaaaly, it's not so much about "engine failure", as opposed to specific parts not living up as long as they should have. There are a few V10 and R5 owners on here reporting excessive cam shaft lobe wear before they even hit the 200000km mark on OEM Castrol Syntec stuff. There are also some gasser guys that are reporting higher than normal oil consumption, although VW claim the latter to be "normal."

One then wonders, "what if" I had used something else from the get go instead? Particularly for the TDI guys.
