04 V8 Fuelpump function

Hi

One of the fuelpumps in my 04 V8 started to run now and then.
The usual priming, when opening drivers door for example, works.
But since some months the pump runs occasionally even while driving.
As example, standing still in D waiting for green, the pump may start and run for some 10 seconds and then stop.
If I touch the throttle the pump may start to run again for a little while.
Sometimes the pump starts and runs for some time while driving.
Has anyone an idea why this behavior has come up?
I would say it's escalating and I wonder if I'm going to be stuck somewhere soon?

The car drives well though, for the moment anyway.

The pump is more than likely transferring gas to the smaller side of the tank (secondary) where the pump that runs the car after initial startup needs more fuel on that side of the tank. Should not be a problem. The tank is kind of "U" shape the primary chamber behind the driver is much larger than the chamber behind the passenger seat. Pretty certain VW calls the pump behind the drivers seat the transfer pump. Since you say it is escalating you may have a fuel pressure leak? The pump will be more active if a pressure loss is detected in the low pressure system. You may be paying more attention to the pump noise? Unless I lift up the bench seat can hardly hear the pumps. When I first got the car and would hear the priming pump it sounded like the seat was adjusting.
