Wow! for a while there I though we were dealing with Snufalufagus...you know, the big sesame street creature everyone thinks exists and everyone talks about but nobody ever sees?

Hello:
I was also initially interested in the Diesel V6 but now diesel is about 40% more expensive than premium and over 60% more than regular as per gasbuddy.com. If you get 20-30% better gas mileage with the diesel you are still losing money. Is my math wrong?

Depends on the area. Diesel here is roughly 40-50 cents per gallon more than 91-proof. With 91 still at $2.20 or so here, it's roughly 25% more per gallon. But, I'll put money on the V6TDI getting 50% better mileage in town for me, going from 15mpg to 22. So, 25% more purchase price for 50% better economy isn't a bad deal. Where things go south is if you try to equate the extra $$$ for the vehicle purchase into the mix. But, since the TDI will likely be closer to the V8, especially when towing, I'd base the purchase price off the V8, where it really shines. becomes a dead issue, as the V6 TDI is supposed to basically split the difference between the gas V6 and V8.

VegasMatt: I checked out gas prices in LV.
LV Reg: 1.74, premium 1.94, diesel 2.29
DFW: Reg: 1.48, premium 1.72, diesel 2.40!!!

In Vegas diesel is 18% more expensive than premium.
DFW: diesel is 39.5% more expensive than premium. Usually the difference here is between 25-30%. With gas prices going down a lot diesel stayed relatively high.

$1.94 for 91 in Vegas? Maybe, but not at a Chevron or any place that sells halfway decent gas. Don't believe everything you read on the web, as it doesn't tell the whole story. I'll look at gas prices on my way home tonight and report back what the "real" numbers are.

But, it still remains that the V6TDI will get better mileage than any gas Touareg out there, it's just a question of how much better. If it's in the low-20's in town, that's still 50% better, at least in my case. So, as long as diesel costs less than 50% more than 91, I'd be in the black.

When Vegas was in the $4.50 + range for premium, Diesel was only about $0.20 more at many stations. There is a relationship, but it doesn't seem linear.

My thinking is that Diesel is the correct way to go here ... More mileage for the buck - and less political / energy fragile than gasoline going forward.

What does impact the equation, as VegasMatt suggested, is overall cost. It appears the MSRP for V6 TDI works - but if dealers decide they want a premium markup, then V6 regular may still be more affordable - assuming you dont need the extra performance benefits.

Arkarch: I went to your picasa albums and was very impressed.
Excellent pictures and driving.
Did all those tregs have the air suspension?
Any other addons (tires...) to make it through the rough terrain?

Trying not to derail - but to quick answer - many, including mine, do not have air. We are using ~ 32" tires on 17" rims (265/70/17 popular), lots of fun.

For more info, check out the Offroad section or Events / Gatherings for Co Rally.

For those that might be interested, I've posted some pics and thoughts about the '09 V6 TDI Arkarch and I saw at the LA Auto Show 10 days or so ago:

I downloaded the dealer order guide posted earlier in this post but it doesn't contain the dealer invoice pricing.

Does anybody have the dealer invoice prices for all the 2009 options? (yes - I said 2009 not 2010)

Thanks!
