Getting close to appoval from the wife. The trip looks fantastic. Been wanting to come , but every year something comes up. Does anyone fly fish on the day off? I love to chase trout.

All are welcome! There are probably some good places to fish, but not in or above Ouray that I have found. Many of the water ways are polluted from mine water runoff. You need to get above this to get good fishing. There is one particular area that I can think off but can't remember the name.

I8ABUG and Butte Beautie are the best fly fishermen and both live in the general area. You may have to cross the passes to the Lake City side to find decent streams. But, What the hey? You have a Touareg.

Are there antique shops and the like in the area? That would keep my wife busy all day pretty easily.

There is plenty of stuff around Ouray to keep others busy. It's a fantastic part of the country!!!

There is also...
Silverton - about 30 mins away - tourist town, railroad-oriented
Telluride - about 70 mins away (via Ridgeway) - boutique ski-town
Montrose - about 45 mins away -
Durango - about 90 mins away - antiques, tourist town, Durango & Silverton NGRR.
Grand Junction - about 2 hours away -
Lots of fun!
(dont forget Wednesday Wine Night What goes well with trout?)

I don't usually keep trout, I like to put them back so the next guy has as much fun with them I did. I do have bunch of snapper and grouper from a trip to the gulf. They would be great grilled up with veggies and cold beer.

Oooh, Mike, there's not a whole lot better than taking freshly caught stream trout back to the cabin or where ever you're staying and frying or grilling them up, some steam them - whatever floats your taste buds.
Of course, you have to catch the damn things first. That's usually my problem.

Hot Springs, mine tours, horseback riding, boating at Ridgeway, you name it.
Or, we can rub bacon grease in the wheel wells of the Jeeps and FJ across the street and wait the the bears to come. That, a cold beer and a lawn chair is a great way to pass the evening.
