I think I asked this once before but want to clarify again, are purpose off road tires needed or would one be able to get away with a set of Nokian WR's since that is what I am currently rolling on? I may end up being annoying with ??'s but want to make sure I am prepared and not a burden while out on the trail. I am already looking into a spare wheel tire combo since that was mentioned to me before. Something I thought of for those that don't have one currently is to maybe check dealerships for wheels they had to replace for scrapes but are structurally sound for a spare. I don't know if that is a viable option, but something to think about. I really want to make it this year and already mapquested from SLC to Ouray and it is not a very long drive really.

Ditto the question on tires. By then, my Dunlops will surely be toast (At 22k+ now), so they'll be up for replacement. I've been leaning towards a set of Goodyear Fortera Tripletreads as my preferred replacements, and am wondering if these will suffice. I am mainly on-road, so I don't need/desire Terra Grapplers or Dueler A/T Revos or anything, but I also want to make sure the Forteras aren't gonna get ripped to shreds out on the trails either.

Yeti, I'm planning this out already too, and have mapped it as well. My drive is about 9 hours, 610 miles. What is it for you? Since you've got the shortcut from SLC to I-70, hopefully myself and the SoCal contingent can
meet up with you on I-70 somewhere.

I can't wait!
Matt

The last two years I've been on this trip... I've seen Continental ContiTracs (all season/suv tire), Pirelli Scorpion ST's, Dunlop Grandtreks all take these trails.

The Pirelli Scorpion STs that were on the 2007 V6FSI VW sent were terrible. I didn't get stuck, but they just didn't have the bite needed in some areas, although the TOUAREG's AWD system got me where I needed to go.

We had the Contis on the V6TDI in 2005 and they did everything without any fuss.

I think you guys will be fine.

Cool, thanks for the good news. Now on to getting that full-size spare...

Matt, my drive time to Ouray from SLC is as mapquest says 6hrs 32mins. The short cut you are referring to that it gives me is some what long in that it is not a highway but does cut time out of going straight down 15 to 70. Last time I did that trip I was in my Lincoln headed to Denver and it was not all that fun, should be better in the Treg. I am not sure how we can corridinate a meeting since it won't take me near as long as it will take you and the guys from Cali to make it there. I will be hitting 70 at Green River which last I remember was not much there but a fuel stop. We can try to figure it out closer to time. I believe I still have you number stuffed in my wallet!!

Yes, expect your all seasons to show noticeable wear, but they should do in most situations you will expect on these trails. Wet rocks will be slippery and possibly impassible in the rain. Most everything else 'should' be taken care of with the AWD. If not, we'll be there with a snatch strap to pull you up or out as necessary.

FULL SIZE SPARE IS MANDATORY. No exceptions with this. I have used mine when stuck WAY back there on a very rough and slippery trail at around 12,000 in altitude. The inflatable spare would not have survived. Heck, one of my brand new REVO's didn't survive from a nasty sidewall cut.

I'll have a more complete list as we get closer, but expect the usually stuff to be recommended: snatch/tow strap, tow eyes, d-ring shackles, etc. Don't sweat the small stuff now. A commitment from new people is more important! I'm happy to see the added interest for 2007!

Matt,

I got my full size spare on E-bay. There's a tire shop owner in Michigan who gets a bunch of 17-inch Canyons all the time. He sells 'em for around 150-bucks.. which is a really good deal.

As for the tire, my dealership had had good used tires that were still 60-70% treadlife on them that they just gave me for free. See if your dealer would be so kind.

Thanks TREG, I'll keep an eye out. I'll probably wait until after the holidays unless I see something of a great deal in the near future. I'l check with my dealer, but if that doesn't work I may just hold on to the two best Dunlops when I get them replaced, and mount up the best of the worst.

Just as a show of hands (per se), How many of those interested (besides Yeti and myself) still need a spare, or maybe even just desire having another wheel? Maybe those of us in need can keep out eyes peeled for a set, and divvy it up?

Matt

If you ever go out of town with the treg you should not rely on the stock blow up spare tire. You should get a regular spare tire anyway if you ever leave on a longer trip either on or off road. I mount my full size tire on a hitch receiver setup and this works well for me. Others put it on roof racks, this is good for you young guys but I would have a hard time lifting the tire off the roof. (hey I am an old man).
