The standard price is $6.99/qt. Wal Mart had the Mobile1 0W40 70 cents less per quart than everyone else which is like getting 1 quart free and since I have no complaints I chose Mobile1 again.
Good luck to you. | 0W30 is not the correct oil for this engine

I just did my first Treg oil change this weekend and it really wasn't much trouble at all, thanks to these very helpful threads (thanks to all). Not much trouble other than about 7 missing fastners underneath, and a WAY overtightened drain plug that I had trouble removing. One reason I do not like garages changing my oil.
One comment I'd like to add is - if you are refilling your engine with oil, and warming it up before checking the level - do NOT run the motor with the fill cap off (!!!). I thought I screwed something up when my motor started running really poorly and my check engine light came on!! I shut the motor off immediately, put the cap back on, and it ran fine when I started it back up. FYI

I just finished my first oil change on our V8 and it was pretty easy thanks to the info I got off this site. I agree on the drain plug, man it must have been some juice monkey training for a show and needed to train a little more on my drain plug. I actually thought it must be a left hand thread because I could not budge that thing for the life of me.
Oh one more thing to add to the list, you also should have some band-aids handy, because after you do crack the drain plugs, it usely ends in some bleeding knuckles, elbows or anything else you wheer using for leverage....
Plus for all the Canadian guys on here 8.5 quarts is equal to 8 liters.
Anyways thanks for the info guys it really was helpful and I will do my best to share once we have a little more time with our new toy.

You might want to invest in a suction system and drain the oil from the top rather than go through that every time. You can get either manual or electric suction systems depending on your cash level and laziness.

siberian | I use a suction system to remove most of the oil - about 6 litres - but suction alone will NOT remove all 8 litres of engine oil.
What the initial suction extraction does do is eliminate Niagara Falls when the bottom oil pan drain plug is first removed - after suction, the remaining couple of litres is much easier to deal with through the two drain plugs (upper and lower).
Other engines can be completely drained with suction, but the 4.2l V8 can NOT.

An electric pump as I stated above will. You need a bigger container and you're good to go.

siberian | Sorry, but it will not
It is not possible to thread an extraction hose deep enough into the sump to extract all the oil.
Maybe if you are turning your Touareg upside down and shaking it to get the last 2 litres out it might work ... but otherwise, still have to remove BOTH oil drain plugs and the filter to get all 8 litres out of the engine

Edit to add:
VW makes an "Old oil collecting and extracting unit V.A.G. 1782" which is a suction tool used to extract used oil from the engine.
In the instructions for the use of this tool is the following warning: "It is not permitted to extract engine oil from 8-cylinder engine."
Other engines, no problem. But since full extraction is not possible from the V8 there is the warning.

Does anyone have the oil drain plug torque specs? The links to the VW Vortex DIY thread is not working after their 'transition'.

Daang, sorry Aircooled - I don't remember where I found the torque spec the first time, but I do know it's now written on my oil pan with a Sharpie Marker, LOL. I'll look under the cover if nobody else replies with the info...

Thanks. I did see the numbers on Vortex last week, but their transition looks like it has killed all old links or their search appears to be broken or all of the older archived content is missing or otherwise inaccessible. I have notes from my change I'll add when I done, let's make sure all of the correct and pertinent data is in this thread.
