DIY: HID kit install in a Halogen T1

Last month I installed an HID kit in my 2005 V6 Touareg.

You will need a VAG-COM cable, and an HID kit of your choice.

The kit I purchased was from this site: Direct Connection Tuning - HID Kits
It was $100 shipped. I ordered it from them because they give you a one year warranty and they are in North Carolina, not Hong Kong. This company was also highly spoken of by the Jetta/GTI crowd on vwvortex.com. I decided to get the 6000K bub temperature, which is a little more blue than the OEM color.

As far as VAG-COM coding, my original coding
was 0100447, I subtracted one to add DRL's as an option and added 128 for "equipped with Bi-Xenons". My new coding is 0100574.

I also took some more pictures of the final install. I compared the lights to my Dad's 335 coupe, and I personally think the color and cut off on the Touareg is slightly better. Both the Touareg and the BMW have their fogs on so you can see the color difference of the xenon bulb. And I think the reflection on the garage door above the Touareg's cut off is the VW emblem.

Below is the write up I did as well as a basic wiring diagram.

Thanks Chris

Just installed these from DirectConnectionTuning
Only differnce was he included a can-bus module for my daytime running lights and said i will not need to do any vagcom changes which i didnt. This install is real easy to do. I have had them on for about a hr and half and they have not flickered and no CEL. They work perfect.

So, did the can-bus module disable the DRLs, or did it enable them?

Why do you need a VAG-COM cable when installing an H.I.D kit ?

Do you have T1 or T2 ?

What kit did you use?

Any modifications to install?

2004 T1 R5 TDI.

Actually, I do not remember the brand of the HID kit, but it seems to be a "normal" one (no resistor added or whatsoever).
I followed step by step the excellent DYI posted here, and everything went smooth. Worth the "pain" (very easy to install indeed)! Take the plunge if you're still hesitating.

A few pics of the result:
