Engine Management Fault Light

Hi Guys, Just took the Treg for a short drive and the Engine Management fault light came on. Take me to the workshop. I assume that unless I have a VDS I have little chance of identifying the problem. Any ideas besides taking it to the Stealer and getting ripped off. I have been here before as we got stuck in Injune Qld with contaminated fuel problem.
I have a number of outstanding jobs as I have the DieselGeek to fit to try and eliminate the engine warning light and the diesel care filter after our previous contaminated fuel problem.
Unfortunately I have been out of commission for a few months with medical problems. Any advice OLIS .

Hi Alan, sorry to hear you had some health issues.

Was there a symbol there in addition to "Workshop"?

Seeing you are in Sydney there may be a CT member in the metro area reading this willing to pipe up and hook up their VCDS and do a scan which will save you a couple of hundred by not going to the stealer.

Do a search as there is a tread dealing with locations of VCDS owners willing to help, I'm sure there are some on there from Sydney.

Why assume the worst?

Either buy VCDS so you can DIY, or find a good, independent, VW specialist to look after your car.

Excellent Wikipedia info on all models:

Your common error can be read and reset with ANY OBDii reader.

No sign of Engine Management light/Time to buy a VCDS?

Great Thanks for your responses and offers of assistance. No sign of the engine management light since I chugged home last week. Treg seems to be running OK this week and No light. Go figure.
I am sick of playing in the dark. I should have bought a VCDS a long time ago but my laptop died. I think I will bite the bullet and buy a new laptop and Ross Tech VCDS HEX-V2 3 Vin enthusiast.
I assume you need to buy from Australian distributor?
Spoke to Mount AutoEquip Brookvale not that knowledgable and no stock of 3 Vin. Any suggestions where to buy and model. OLIS

And for a few bucks, you will be stuck using one version of whatever software they hacked, no support from ROSS-TECH.

Or get the real deal:
