Sherman Pass Jeep Trail and Monache Meadows. Difficult and Easy. California.
Here is the trail report form the run I had posted up here that no one came along for. Haha. This all went down June 14th and 15th. 1 Touareg, 1 FJ Cruiser, and 3 Jeeps. I had 32's on the Touareg, the FJ is quite built with 33's, 1 of the Jeeps was lifted with 33's, and the other 2 Jeeps were completely stock.
Sherman Pass Jeep Trail is rated difficult and Monache Meadows is rated easy. There were a total of 5 down trees blocking the trail on Sherman Pass, that was fun. Good thing for a couple axes and the winch on the FJ. Sherman Pass turned out to be hell for the Touareg while the stock Jeeps cruised through with their little 28's and no problems at all. That sucked. It was a long day for the Touareg on Sherman Pass. After Sherman Pass we got back on the road and headed out towards Monache Meadows. A short drive to the trailhead and then another hour out to the camp spot. Its a rather easy trail with a few water crossings. Onto the pics. Monache Meadows
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course there is much more to see on these two trails than whats shown in the pics i posted. So if you want a very good chalenge for the Touareg, go hit up Sherman Pass. And for everyone, I highly recommend Monache Meadows. It is such a beautiful place that everyone should experience.

Thanks for the TR. Looks like fun.
I thought you had air. Or am I just not seeing the lift? Looks like a fire went through there.

Nope, no air. Its a base model V6. If I had air im sure it would have made things a little easier, but still, the trail was a huge challenge for the Touareg.
Yes, the McNally fire tore through that area back in July-August of 2002. Things are starting to turn green again though. You should head out that way sometime. You would definitely enjoy it.

Great stuff there! That looks like a pretty rocky area for sure. Not sure I want to subject the Nittos to that (oh, wait...
The greenery is great as well. Beats the crap out of our usual desert tan around here! May very well be worth checking out sometime... Loving the shirt too! Matt

wha happened?
Can you get into any more detail about what made it so challenging for the Touareg and why the FJ and the Jeep did better.
Also have a few questions: I'm guessing it was the lack of axle articulation resulting in less traction? I know Jeeps and FJs have us beat in that category. Also I take it you were in low with the center locked? It looks like you are sporting Nitto's, correct? Was clearance or power an issue? Did you air down? I am very interested in taking mine offroad and am interested so see what aspect of the treg met its limits first.
