| OEM hitch install
To everyone who wants to install the OEM hitch, do not fear, there is nothing to it. Before I started, I heard horror stories of backup sensor wires, bolts being too short, lights cracking, ect. After reading the instructions and being a somewhat decent weekend do-it-yourselfer, I ripped it apart. The lights came right out with a nice tug, my backup wires are all in tact, the bolts that came with the kit WERE, in fact too short (local VW dealership had the new ones in stock for 20 bucks and were open on a saturday at 2!).
The whole install with wiring kit and everything took about 2 hours and the hitch cost 700 or so. I think this is a good price, considering the computer capatability and not running the risk of shorting out your car's lights with taps and relays.
My first tow! My boat came home. |

Nicely done. Yeah, the hitch install isn't too bad, but putting in that module is kind of a pain, due to that interior side panel. How long did it take you?

It took about 2 hours of work, but I was able to do a magic trick and not fully remove the panel. I did remove the roof trim at the rear, the pillars trim, and the access door.
Total install time with a trip to the auto parts store, VW, and lunch was about 4 hours. Having never worked on this car yet, I took some time to learn it, especially where the bumper cover mounts are.

That is 5800, but I would imagine I would be a little less than that.

That's about how much I'll be towing (My Toyota Supra). How did the power feel?

Did you have to make any cut outs on the bumper cover? How were the instructions for the wiring harness?
What size or part number were the correct bolts?
I have found a few 05s I like but none have a hitch.
Thanks.

There should be a plate that can be removed on the bumper cover to allow the hitch to mount there. Look in the center, on the rearward section of the bumper cover by the muffler. You can either leave this cover off after the hitch is installed, or use a template posted on here to Dremel it out and re-install it around the hitch.

| VAG tweaking needed?
Does anyone know what VAG work needs to be done to ensure proper operation of the trailer module? I've looked all over here and VWVortex, but I haven't seen anything relating to using a VAG COM to tell the vehicle that a trailer control module has been added. I just ordered the oem module and wiring harness from 1vwparts and they told me that the Tregg needed to be VAGed to properly use the trailer module. Can anyone help me?
