Basic trailer wiring

I am only looking to tow a small 5x9 trailer using a basic 4 pin wire-brake lights, turn signals, parking lights. Does anyone know what the best basic wire set-up is and how to install? Any directions would be greatly appreciated.
On a side note, I purchased a class III Hidden Hitch which I installed yesterday. Total cost-$137.00. I have been towing trailers for years and know this is an outstand hitch. For those of you that can afford to throw away $1,000 or more for an OEM hitch more power to you. For those that want a very good hitch at a great price buy a Hidden Hitch, install it yourself and spend the left over $863 on other upgrades!

I visited the Hidden Hitch web site but could not find a hitch for a Touareg. Which model # did you use?

You have two basic options:

1. Buy the proper VW wiring harness and trailer module. This will set you back about $400. I've got the part numbers in another thread.
2. Use a Hoppy, draw power from the battery, and hack the taillight wiring to signal the Hoppy. Check here: tregcentrai.com Deluxe Trailer Wiring kit

As I'm sure you're aware, the Touareg has a pretty sensitive electrical system. Be careful hacking wires. Maybe spend some of that $863 (actually, it's more like $600, as tregcentral has the OEM kit for $710+ship) on the proper VW wiring?

Here is an email quote from 1stvwpart.com it's about $75 less from them. I was inquiering last week to them about it.

"You will need the trailer kit, which comes with everything you need except for the ball and the 8 bolt sleeves. Here are the part numbers and prices:
7L0-092-105-UA $633.56 (trailer hitch kit) 7L6-801-670 $4.97ea qty8 required. These are required when purchasing the trailer hitch kit."

Their website lists it as $598.14 and including the ball, however I remember reading somewhere that VW doesnt include the ball/receiver anymore in the OEM box...I'm guessing then that the $633 is with tax or the inflated price.

I purchased the hitch from autoanything.com. Just look up the Touareg and it will give you the correct hitch. They currently have free shipping. I received the hitch within 3 days or ordering.

Do your own wiring without the VW module? Y/N ?

European cars with computer controlled wiring plus trailers/caravans are the norm in the UK, there are companies there that sell relay systems that tap the wiring and sense the lights being on, then switch power to the lights from a direct battery line.

Go to ebay and search for : 7 way Smart bypass relay

US$50 then get some bits from the local auto store like sockets and wire. US$25 worth of bits and some quick research on the internet as to which wire to tap.

I have one, its a wonderful thing. Sure the MFI won't tell me when I have a lamp out on the trailer. But it also doesn't complain when I have a trailer connected.

I tow rarely, so happy with this solution

*** Cancel that, I had to go the route I advised because local law requires brake, tail and indicator lights to be separate lights - indicators must be orange, the treg central solution is everything in a box for the US market, mine only useful outside the US ***
