Spark Plugs

Has anyone changed their own spark plugs, i want to do them myself but would like to know if it is very hard to do. I have done this with every other car i have owned but am a little woried about the touareg. I would hate to pay the 500 dollars for the 40,000 mile warranty so they could replace them for me. If so, where did you order the plugs from.

1. A warranty probably won't cover the plugs anyway. They are a wear item.
2. Mine on the V6 were a cakewalk. I've never seen a V8 apart to do them in person, but I believe Tahoe did a writeup on changing the V8 plugs on his site. Try a search for him.
3. I ordered mine from 1swVWparts.com. For the 6, they were (I think) about $12 each.

Also, the V6 needs plugs at 40k miles, the V8 at 60k.

Good luck,
Matt

V8 sparkplugs are real simple
remove cover
Disconnect connectors (goes easier with a very smal flat head screwdriver)
The coils come straight out with some resistance so a firm steady pull
Advice: replace the coilpacks because they will go too(when you do not want it). The cheapest to be found are at "VW Parts" - "Volkswagen Parts" - Parts and Accessories Catalog. ($23 a piece)
On the drivers side you will see a metal bar that needs to be removed. It is very easy.
You might blow any debris out of the holes first (if there is any)
plugs come out fairly easy
Install new plugs (they are pre gapped)
As said install new coil packs
connect connectors, put bar back on, cover on top and in 45 min-1 hour you are done!

You can send me a beer now since I bassically did the for for you (I just used your hands)

That should be it on the coilpacks
If I remember well you need the bosch irridium plugs (about $10 a piece)
Just give zeb at VW parts a call if you are not sure.
I am sure he has sold MANY

This is one of those maintenance things that almost anybody can do and save big
Just on labour ($500 -$80 = $420)

On coilpacks my dealer charged $52 a piece, so I saved $240 more and that did not require extra labor.
So DYI in my case saved me $700 for 1 hour easy labor.
I do not know that many people that make that much an hour. Do you?

This how dealers make money in my opinion
I am convinced that those plugs will easily do twice the amount of miles though.
The platinum plugs in my ford lasted longer than 100000 miles and were a lot cheaper(but a pain to install)
