nice photos!..the obstacle in the 2nd and 3rd pics would be tough enough to climb on my KTM

I prefer the Touareg for street use, but the LR3 is so perfectly utilitarian...huge interior volume and all the off road stuff as standard equipment..if they put a V8 turbodiesel in it then it would get really exciting.

Brilliant write-up!

"Leather and wood were seemingly glued loosely to each other in a
shop full of retards."

Classic stuff!

Wink

Yea I enjoyed that read and the humour, here in England the Landrover is good but they do use the Defender short wheelbase if they have any serious mud slinging or climbing to do, but on the other hand you are back to basics with one of those. All the best stay lucky !!!!!

Thanks.
39,200 miles on the Touareg now. No problems, still have not replaced the brake pads, on second set of tires. Other than oil changes no trips to the dealer.

Great write up, and great pics! I have a 99' Discovery series 2 and I love it! If i'm going to do any off roading it will be in that. I just have way more confidence in the old beater than in my Treg. I live in Chicago and the only time I get to do some off roading near me is when they are doing construction for new Town homes and such! I have taken the Treg when I first bought it and I ended up getting stuck do to my own mistakes, but I still had fun. I can't compare to the newer Land Rovers but for some reason my 99' is just way more fun! I have put that thing through some pretty tough terrain and every time she just goes through flawlessly. The Touareg is a GREAT vehicle and i'm not just saying that because I own one. It's amazing that a vehicle that heavy is so agile on the road, and when I push through corners and turns it's almost effortless for it. My wife really wants to trade in the Disco for a new LR3, but i'm not gonna. I'd rather get that thing dirty than my Treg!!!

If you want to see what the Treg is capable of bring it out to the Rally next year. We get strange looks all the time from the Jeep and Toyota crowds. After they see we can travel the same terrain as them then they get it. Granted, it is not a rock crawler and never will be but it is still a damn good vehical offroad.

Add to that the Moab slickrock - including Hells Revenge - in steel V6's, and some of Big Bear's more aggressive trails - Gold Mountain and Jacoby. Nope, probably not Bear's John Bull, or the Rubicon - although I have a Rubicon expert working up a plan.

Arguing over the Rovers vs the Touareg - both are fine vehicles that can competently do trails. However I think the skill and knowledge of the driver likely trumps the pros and cons of each vehicle out in the public. Still - thank-you for the writeup. Good read!

The shared welcoming feature - Rovers and Touaregs can both be driven hundreds of miles over Interstates to the trailhead, perform the trail, and return. Folks in Jeeps and modified trucks end up trailering theirs - or never going.

My big gripe about Touareg is VW - who does little to promote Touareg Offroading or encourage third-party mods - or even bother to show up to SEMA with a proper Touareg. On those counts, the Rovers, Jeeps, and Toyotas of the world still have the upper hand.

But - I still enjoy "Amazing the Natives"
