I own both a V10 and a LR3. In my opinion there is no comparison to be made, the Touareg is a better vehicle in every aspect...build quality, feel, engineering, etc. Go drive them back to back. Driving the LR3 after just driving the Touareg feels like the LR3 is old mechanically. You get so much more interms of driver feedback from the treg such as steering, corning, braking, and I would even bring up acceleration
To most people view the Land Rover brand as a "luxury image" brand as the Range Rover gets most of its press for its looks and badge. However when it comes down to it, it is mechanically a ford which isn't bad but its not as advanced as a treg... |

I own both an 08 V10 and an 07 LR3 HSE that is very modified. When in "lifted", I have no less than 15" clearance at the lowest point. The rover is much better off road and for space. The V10 is a Passat wagon on steroids however the Passat still has more cargo room.
There is no comparison in finish, the VW is better and more stylish however there is almost no where to put anything like a couple Nalgene bottles. If you want to bring along the ARB freezer/fridge, you can't even open the lid fully because the ceiling is too low. The VW is WAY more fun to drive on pavement and smooth trails however the LR3 shines when used for what it was designed to do whether that's taking 7 people to the game or dancing through rugged trails with ease.

You cannot compare a fully off road modified LR3 with a Touareg
Compare apples to apples Stock LR3 vs stock Touareg with identical tires. I think the Treg would not loose on any aspects regarding its capabilities on or off road I think. Only downside on the Treg is that you cannot modify it the way you can an LR3. I think I would choose for a heavily modified oldie for serious off roading and use my treg for daily use. For hauling stuff I have trailers. One of them would be pretty good in off road situations. It is a home made antique of about 70 years old with a T Ford axle. I bought it about 8 years ago from the 1st owner

Nah, stock to stock the lr3 would trounce the treg - wheel travel limitations alone is the main thing that comes to mind first, more wheels touching = more traction in more situations. The treg has barely 5" while the lr3 has over 13" in the rear.
Stock to stock the lr3 gets more usable clearance as well when the "extended" off road mode kicks in. Where the lowest points on the lr3 are similar heights, the lr3 has more in the middle where the treg is more or less the same all the way front to rear. Not to mention some very vulnerable little gadgetry underneath such as the poorly located ones just under the rear wheel suspension members - they'd be the first thing to be ripped off back there. The treg has some really sweet features though such as user selectable suspension heights that are retained at higher speeds as well as the "lock" feature for jacking. The terrain response system of the lr3 is superior as well when combined with a little skill. Rear departure angle is better on the lr3 too and wading depth is rated about 5" deeper. So, the treg is TOTALLY cool and you'd think I could sell it knowing we already have the lr3 tricked out and a bmw wagon but I also love it.

It is quite surprising to hear someone say that the Range Rover is not as advanced as the Touareg. I can appreicate the fact that you own one (as I do both) but that is hardly a reason to make a statement that is simply not credible. If you can, please articulate the ways that the RRSC is technicaly inferior to the Touareg. It will certainly be an interesting read. |

to add to this, I also owned an 07 Range Rover Supercharged, which uses the same terrain response system as the lr3 but has lots more punch behind it and much better road handling than the lr3, but not nearly as sweet as the V10 Treg on the hwy however the RRSC actually has better clearance than the lr3 while giving up a couple inches wheel travel.
The build of the RRSC is impeccable and well above the lr3 but of course I can have the lr3 and the bmw sportwagon for the same price as the RRSC was.

One might simply see the pricing as these vehicles are compared, lr3 at the bottom $55k mainly utilitarian feel but very capable. V10 Touareg in the middle at $75k good at many things but not the expert in utility but much nicer than the lr3, then the RRSC at $95k more capable than the touareg, just as fast or close enough and very nice interior. Soon the new engines in the RR will be off the charts, 500 hp v8 is slated for the "normal" models and lr3 while the SC will be a bigger/faster version. In Europe it comes with a TDV8 that is similar to the V10 but not quite however the mpg is greatly improved over the SC gas model.

$5000 Alternator?
I just talked to my technician, who specializes in Audi/VW and told me you got ripped off paying that much for an alternator, he said the actual alternator itself is about $260.00 +/- and about $120.00/labor, he also said that it could have been the cable from the alternator to the battery which would have still been less than $1000 to replace parts/labor and said it would have taken about a day to complete. I feel bad that you paid that much, what were you charged for? I am curious what these dealerships are thinking. Did you get it done at a dealership? If anyone has any mechanical issues and gets an astronomical quote from a dealer let me know and I will talk to my technician and tell you what it should be. It hurts me to see people get ripped off on repairs on thier vehicles. My technician is probably the most honest guys anyone will ever meet. If anyone has anyquestions please feel free to contact me.

That is sad, I missed that part but some dealers just try the most ridiculous stuff. One Land Rover dealer north of Seattle tried twice to fake charge for stuff - the first, to replace an $80 parking sensor they quoted $300 and my trusted other dealer said it was pretty much plug-n-play which would not require expensive "computer" time. 2nd thing was to replace a windscreen they said to remove my snorkle would be at least 2-3 hours labor before the window job which was going to be $1000 on it's own ..... I freakin did it myself in 15 minutes total, 10 min of which was to locate my tools. jerks. It comes close to fraud in my opinion.

I spent a great deal of time this year pondering the 06 LR3 HSE and the 04 TREG V8. Drove both on and off, generally in thick sand, mud and water. Call it advanced trail riding. Both rigs were exceptional and performed great. In the end the VW won out, was about a thousand dollars less and had only 20000 miles. Off road the TREG shines, air suspension is first rate and throttle response top notch.
On the streets I prefer my 07 335xi though!
