ownership does not "make" it a ford anymore than it was a bmw previously.

I drive a lot off road, never for fun, i would always prefer a road, someplaces you need to go there just are not roads. I do not at all understand driving off road for fun, anyone that does that simply has not been stuck enough. Get stuck badly enough and far enough from a road and you will stop "off roading" for fun. I can not give technical reasons why. I can however say, based on thousands and thousands off miles of experiance driving off road the rover is simply a better car off road. I also can not understand why folks insist on calling these cars trucks, ok call them SUV's is ok, but they are not, nor will they ever be trucks, calling them that is just silly.

I have had a 06 Touareg for the past 6 months and just recently bought an 08 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. Don't get me wrong..the Treg is nice but for acceleration, handling and off road capability I will take the Range Rover. Have had both in precarious off road positions and the Rover outshines the Treg..particularly in mud and slippery conditions.

In my experience (sans aftermarket mods) the Rover is it.

PS I had a Land Cruiser a few years back and it was ok nothing special...too top heavy.

Did you have a V6 or something? the V8 and V10 touaregs are faster than the RR sport supercharged in terms of acceleration. I think handling is about even between them, and most of the RR supercharged come stock w/ 20" wheels, which suck for offroading...the RR is a nicer design overall (in terms of style), and the obvious wowie factor for the people around you that don't matter...but for twice the price it better be .

I have a V8. My best 0-60 in the treg is 7.5 sec....my 0-60 in the supercharged is 7.0...the treg is NOT faster in acceleration...40 less horse and 86 less ft lbs of torque with only a few hundred lbs difference in weight.....also handling is not even in my side by side experience ( I still own both) the dynamic suspension in the rover is quite superior...again IMHO.

I can olny agree with you that the 20's are not ideal for off roading but throw a pair of Nokians on it and you will be amazed at the capability in most all conditions (sans rocky hill climbing)

Lastly I was not commenting on price I was commenting on capability. Sure more money should buy you better and it does....

no issues ...On desirability I agree I'd rather have a RRSS..and I also agree with the right tires the RR would ultimately be superior offroad. Land Rover has been at this game a very long time and they know their stuff. Both vehicles are far more capable than anything I'd throw at them.

for some reason RR supercharged owners like racing me..it usually starts of with mutual interest in vehicles, then the inevitable question "does she go"?. I have a close friend who has one and I'll pull slightly on his...did a couple of acceleration runs vs people I don't know and I pulled slightly again. Maybe I got a fast one...its not a huge difference, I find them even for the most part, a slight difference in reaction time will push it either way. V10 would trounce either one. I don't believe the published acceleration figures for the V10..its much faster than the claimed 7.5 (more like low 6s).

V10 engine in the RR sport chassis would be the ultimate combination IMO

From Motortrend Test back in 2005 : "The Touareg TDI is the slow player in the group--if you can call a 6.3-second sprint to 60 mph "slow." But don't let that fourth-place result fool you. We're in love with this turbodiesel V-10. There's an Atlas quality to the engine's torque, a sense of limitless reserves. Imagine pushing a giant bowling ball down a mountain. Might take a moment or two to get the big ball rolling, but then--watch out. The TDI feels like that. As we were hammering along a barren Death Valley road at 120 mph, the mighty V-10 felt like it was loafing. And while the Benz was gulping down fuel like a jet fighter in full afterburner, the VW's fuel gauge moved as slowly as a sundial. Oh, you could make some serious cross-country time in this peach."

I'd agree on the Low/mid 0-60. In the spring, once my V10 is fully broken in, I'll place my Traqmate in the Treg and get a current read on 0-100-0 performance. Should be interesting. No point testing in the winter!

Neither of the vehicles discussed are all that "sporty". Maybe, in regards to Sport Utility Vehicles, but not cars in general. Physics still applies, and 6000lbs is 6000lbs! The Touareg is well damped and stable, with great brakes.

Why in the world should an alternator - or a master cylinder - for any vehicle (except an "exotic") cost $5000 ???

Sorry, I just can't fathom that at all.

I mean, I believe you, but it just doesn't make any sense. You could practically hire someone to hand make the darn things from scratch for that amount.
