I just bought a 2004 V8 w/ air suspension and am loving it. Since it's been in the "field" for a while there's been plenty of time to get all the bugs fixed (factory recalls, etc.) so if you can find one with a good service record, in my opinion, you should be fine.

I just bought an 04 v8 and i absolutely love the car, i had a transmission problem that i am sure you have heard about where the transmission shifts really hard, the problem is a combination of out of date programing and a bad valve body somewhere in the transmission, once these were fixed the car runs like a dream. they were all fixed under warranty with no issues by the way, that is the only issue i have had

I have had my '04 V8 for 2 years now. I have the service records back to new.
For the 1st 18 months of my Treg's life it did go to shop for a variety of items. Once those were sorted out it has been extremely reliable and problem free. I love it. My only gripe is that it sure likes to drink fuel! If you find an '04 at a good price, that has had all the service updates, you should have no reservations. If you plan to keep it a long time, and this is true of ANY VW product or model year, get the extended warranty. VW repairs can be expensive. |

I bought an 04 in Nov of 04. Pick any problem from the now long list of issues and I've had them. For every problem I took to the Dealership, a reasonable solution was found. Things eventually smooth out. Owning an 04 means you need to be more patient.

TREG 04 V8
Hello: I'm a 24 hour newbie and this is my first post. I bought my V8 Touareg with all the goodies as a new truck and have had a few minor issues that were resolved under warranty. I have all services and updates performed. It is now pushing 70k miles and I plan to keep it. I do have an extended warranty to 100k. These are great vehicles if you can forget about the gas mileage. My wife has a Prius so our family combined gas mileage averages out to about 32mpg--that's how I calm my gas conscience.

I am new to the site, and have only had our 04 V6 for a week, by the info i get here I'm glad i bought the warranty. It has 34k on it now. bought warranty up to 6yr 70k-actual vdub bumper2. I thought that all those wonderful gadgets will break sometime. I see a lot of caution against a older(by vin)one. mine has a original delivery of 10/04. are the later 04s better? I had to let go of my jetta tdi-not enough space for my impending 3rd kid. After driving many, settled on an almost perfect burgundy T V6 one. Couldn't get my wife to take a V8, too fast(For her) and too expensive for me. Needed the better MPG, and lighter won't get stuck as easy on her dad's muddy farm. I hope i haven't stepped into a maintenance needy vehicle. I have almost no problems with the rest of my fleet, that's why i keep buying more of them.

Have had my '04 since Apr 2004 - no major issues in 48000 miles. Peeling paint on the plastic interior (replaced by dealer no charge) was the only problem I've had. Lease is up next month and I don't think I'll get another Touareg - the gas mileage is pathetic and we are soon headed for $5/gallon at the gas pump. Can't see paying 4 or 5k a year on gas!

Good to hear you haven't had mechanical issues. I have read a few horror stories here. The MPG is a concern, but we will use it for short runs-- the Eurovan does the roadtrips. My wife has put only 52K miles on her Beetle in 9 1/2 years.
We bought it mostly for the space and to get out of the mud, snow and muck on the farm. I got a great deal on the treg and plan to keep it till the ranch kills it.
