Bought an 04 V10 a week ago and my thought process went as follows:

Get a vehicle with a VIN that ends in ^45000
Get a vehicle that comes with an VW extended warranty or one can be purchased
Check Carfax and VW service records for any multiple service visits in a short period
Check to make sure TSB are done prior to warranty expiration

Problems can still occur (and with a vehicle this complex I am sure they will) but I don't think it is a foregone conclusion that all 04's are going to be problem if you do your homework and be proactive on maintainance. Just my newbie opinion.

I bought my V8 new in 2004 and have all the bells and whistles. Have had relatively few issues. However I did pony up for an extended warranty up to 100K miles. Current odo is 68k and just had to replace drive shaft which seems to be a problem with these cars at this mileage. It was covered ($1600) by extended warranty. I intend to keep mine and think that overall it is a great vehicle. V8 Beige/Tan Interior

I have an 04 Manufactured Treg and it has been the best vehicle I've owned ! Have 120,000 klms on it now. I can't think of a vehicle I'd rather own at the moment. Only issue was transmission valves, not restricted to 04 models, was fixed under warranty. Buy a diesel if you want good fuel mileage, mind you if you are in the US and get that real cheap petrol I suppose you can run a V8, but if not get a V6 or V10 TDi.

I have 04 v8 with 26,000 miles (fully loaded - except for Onstar) that i just bought a week ago. I love the car all the way around. There have been people on this site that have had issues with the 04, but mostly electrical and covered by warranties. I have been shopping around for warranties and leaning toward the 4 or 5 year. It's an awesome car and I got a great price for it.

My 04 was close to perfect. Stepper motor under warranty, the only issue. Buy one like you would any other used car. Check it out, have a mechanic check it out. Any issues pass and find another one. Lots of used SUV's out there now at great prices.

think maintenance!!!

100 dollar oil changes 500 dollar services 1900 dollar brake jobs (unless you call Geoff at Alretta for help). This is a great car, the ultimate snow mobile and rain mobile, but a used one may prove very expensive to keep up. Be ready to pay hefty repair bills, particularly a 2004. Now mine is out of warranty, its time for it to go.

Make that $70 oil changes, 10k services at part cost(1stvwparts.com) and a $600 brakejob (parts only) and some hours on the garagefloor or under the hood and dash and tires from tirerack.
Mine is experienced with 87k on the ODO. Only major brakedown was a waterpump that went bad at 70k. So I did an early timingbelt while they were at it so the extra expenses were about 200 above normal.
No extra warranty an so far not needed.
Letting it go because it is out of warranty is financialy not smart unless money is not an object. So far mine does not cost more the expedition I had before.
And yes I have an early 2004. I would buy one again.

How much was the water pump to replace? And I thought the 4.2 V8 was a timing chain not a timing belt?

Thanks

V6-Timing Chain
V6 TDI-???
V8-Timing belt-due at 80,000 miles
R5 TDI and V10 TDI- Gear-driven

From what I understand on the V8, it's prudent to change the water pump while doing the timing belt. It is in the same vicinity, and is apparently very accessible when changing the belt.

It was all together about $1800
It included timing belt, serpentine belt, new waterpump, new thermostat, tensioner and all of the labor including about $100 for overnight delivery on parts since my alternative would have been a rental car. However I think they should have had these parts in stock since it is a maintenance item. But then the dealer stocks hardly anything anymore.
It is labor intensive since the whole front of the car needs to be taken off
