I purchased my wife's 05 v6 from a Land Rover dealer and the aftermarket warranty they offered was 4k for 48mo. which I thought was high so I declined. Looking now at the repair cost of some thing’s it might have been a wise purchase but I couldn't stomach paying almost a quater of the sales price on a warranty.

I feel ya on the having skill to rebuild tranny, motor etc after several rebuilds myself, BUT, as i just got my treg out the shop yesterday for a new carrier bearing, driveshaft and intake manifold gasket i would have had to pay 1100 dollars in parts alone vise me paying a hundred, gettin a rental car(took 4 days 4 parts alone). Not even to mention the electrical side of the treg, drive by wire throttle body. wait till your MAF or TPS needs and "adaptation". Thats a 300 dollar program(vagcom) alone. Vs. your warrenty. All im sayin is my extended warranty paid for itself in one visit and ive still got 20000 miles left on mine.

Then there goes the prop shaft, emission sensor goes bad (tranny has to be dropped), stepper motor, turbos, etc. I would like to see the bill then.

I had 60,890 miles on mine and had to replace both turbos under a TSB ($5500). I had come back from a longer vacation to find this out when I left the car perfectly fine. Extended warranty covered it all. There are many other TSBs (not recalls) that you will have to pay on your own.

You can risk it without extended warranty and pray that nothing goes wrong. You could end up with $120 services for long time. However, things can turn around suddenly.

Getting an extended warranty is the second best thing I did. First one was buying the egg. Needless to say that it already paid off twice before I've even made half of the intrest free payments for it I just cant be cheap to an expensive vehicle.

Cheers!

The best way to determine if you should buy any automobile is to save up the cash so you can write a single check. That way you will know if you really want it and can afford it. There is some satisfaction in knowing you have the cash on hand to buy it out right, without actually buying it.

Just Purchased 2005 V8 w/ warranty

Just purchased a 2005 V8 for $17K w/ a 3 year 36K warranty. I have owned two Passats before this and feel like all should be well. However when buying a truck with 65,000 miles on it I needed piece of mind. I don't drive very much, however I have always wanted a Touareg. Search around for the cost of the vehicle should be quite affordable when compared to your salary. Good luck!

In essence you are saying The best I did was buying a V10 touareg because I love throwing money at it because it is a piece of junk that brakes down all the time? Since I cannot afford to throw my own money at it, the next best thing I did was to get an extended warranty on it so the waranty company can do that for me?

There is no risk in not getting an extended warranty.
If you need an extended warranty because otherwise you can not pay for unforseen repairbills you bought a car you cannot afford
I guess Orange okie now reads that I am a dave ramsey fan too.

nickm~ going back to your statement:

"Rule of thumb I personally use is spend no more than 5% of after tax income on vehicle purchase and running costs."

if you were to purchase an '06 v8 for $24k and finance it at 5% for 60mo (to stretch it out) your payment would be approximately $450/mo. I'd say that's a pretty typical scenario and loan payment for the average consumer & low for touareg purchase. In order to keep within your 5%, you'd have to make $9,000/mo. Whether or not that's before or after taxes, not many are going to qualify from an income standpoint. Good luck getting a newer diesel... you'd have to make about $20,000/mo base on your criteria! You must be a bank exec ;-D
