Wiper Rain Sensor

The rain sensor in my 08 V6 Reg is either not working properly or a poorly designed feature. I've seen many comments in this forum from other owners with similar complaints. I've experienced the wipers not coming on at all until significant rain falls on the windshield at highway speed despite having the interval dial set to the shortest duration; the wipers coming on so frequently on a nearly dry windshield until they make noise despite the interval dial being set to the longest duration; and it seems that the sensor is even in operation when I put the wiper in position 2 or 3 (which I thought was fixed slow and fast speeds) as I've had them shut off while in one of these positions and then come back on again intermittently. I can understand that maybe this feature doesn't work as intended but what I can't understand is why VW wouldn't provide the ability to disable it? I mean we are not talking about bluetooth or some convenience feature here, wipers are a critical safety feature and one that I'd prefer not to be messing around with instead of watching the road in a storm. I'd like to just have a normal intermittent wiper with adjustable interval along with a fixed slow and fast speed for heavier rain. Is that possible?

I know it can be Vagged to be intermittent-only on the first-generation, not sure about T2.

It is possible to change them to just intermittent type wipers but you need a VAG Com cable and software to do it. I doubt the dealer would change it for you.
