Brought my Touareg back in today. VW is going to replace the transmission under warranty. I thought I'd have to fight tooth and nail to get them to do that.

I brought it in with the transmission problem back in the Summer when it had about 90,000kms. I had the transmission replaced a couple of weeks ago with 101,000kms. I do have the extended warranty to 120,000kms too. I'm not sure if the original or extended covered it. I don't really care.

The new transmission is fantastic. The shifts are crisp and the no clunking at all. I love it!

Nagging Shifting Problems

My V10, 53K mi is experiencing the same shifting problems described here. The latest software update, touted to fix everything, improved the overall driving characteristics, more responsive shifting, etc. but didn't solve the problem.

The harsh bang and abrupt downshifts still occur when cruising along at 40-50 mph and the transmission needs to downshift from 5th into 4th or 3rd depending on the throttle position and desired rate of acceleration. The effect is worse when going uphill or with additional weight in the vehicle.

By the way, for those who claim the problem is intermittent, I've noticed that the problem doesn't occur if the transmission shifts all the way to 6th and then needs to downshift; everything works smoothly. But only allow the transmission to shift no higher than 5th, it occurs every time it needs to downshift and the throttle is opened far enough.

On my last visit, my service writer who's normally top-notch, especially for VW, thought the condition would be corrected by changing the fuel filter. Now he's faced with the prospect of repairing his credibility in addition to my vehicle.

From what others have written, I think I'll try the valve body next.

Valve Body it is from your description. Had the same issues and symptoms. In the end I could get mine to occur at will, usually at low load low speed in 5th or 4th apply throttle and the shift would happen with a jolt. I had to go through the change Trans oil, filter and all the other stuff before the Valves were finally changed. I think in the US you have a longer warranty on the the transmission than we do in Australia.

Ahhh, what a relief

Valve body it is. Not only is the shifting problem gone but overall shifting is much smoother, too.

Yep, U.S. drive-train warranty is 60K and longer if problem was identified beforehand but couldn't be corrected until later.

So glad I found this thread! Our '04 V8 with 33,000 mls has the same problem! It scared the sh$$t out of me and my family, to say the least!

I printed some pages and copied the link to help my dealer to fix this issue. I hope that nothing has been really damaged badly, happened like 5 times now!

I just bought an 04 V8 and started having the same hard downshifting described here, took it in and had the transmission reprogrammed and the valvebody everyone is talking about replaced and the problem was solved immediately, not only was the problem fixed but the transmission shifts a lot smoother at every other speed and gear. It was all done under warranty and I had no problem with the dealer fixing it. excelent experience with this dealership it is Commonwealth VW/Audi in santa ana, CA if anyone is in the area
