To Lindeman, rolk and clintjg:

I have exactly the same problem, although my transmission was replaced (by a OEM remanufactured 2004 version) last year, due to slipping upshiftig. Before that I had the same “uncomfortable shifting at low speed” as now again. So maybe it is only a question of time when the 2004 transmissions are saying "goodbye".

A couple of days ago I also posted the following thread:
http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f62/hard-gear-shifting-cured-tcm-replacement-18820.html

Could you please tell me
1.) if in the meantime they found an acceptable solution for your Touaregs ?
2.) if your Touaregs were produced before 11/2005 ?

The reason I am asking is that starting from 11/2005 there were different valve bodies installed into the Touareg transmissions, which also needs a different TCM (transmission control module).
I don’t read any transmission complaints from Touareg owners with MY2006 or newer.
That’s conspicuous.

Sorry, I mixed up some dates. The first "official" valve body update was performed in mid2004. The second valve body change affected the MY2006 vehicles, but there the problems seemed to be under control already. So the correct questions are:

Get the euro 4200 trans flash. I had those symptoms myself and they and others disappeared with the 4200 code.

As I wrote in my other post (see link above) I performed the 4200 trans flash already. I agree it improved the shifting quality, but it is still not there where it should be for a vehicle in this price class. Drive for example a 2007 Touareg and then you know what "smooth shifting" means.
I also realized that the effect of a TCM reset is even better than the 4200 trans flash. Unfortunately after 3-4 days the shifting becomes jerky again. So I am asking myself why the TCM "learns" wrong ?

So far I have not heard that the TCM learning function can be deactivated. I would immediately do it. Originally the main purpose of this function is to keep transmission behaviour stabil over vehicle lifetime, despite component wear inside the transmission, see VW self study program 300. But this sort of harshness is more reducing the transmission lifetime. In fact, my first transmission had the same symptoms at the beginning and after a while it was destroyed.

Hmmm. Seems a popular thread today as I didn't see your above post.

My transmission had been replaced in 2006 after the original self-destructed. Also replaced was the prop shaft/bearings, rear differential and the stepper motor.

I can't say I have any particular harshness today, except on rare occasion. The 4200 code was the final piece of the puzzle for me.

Good luck.

I also tried the 4200 code for a few weeks. It was better, but still not up to snuff, and not as smooth as it used to be (not that this Aisin trans was ever really a smooth operator.) I've since gone back to the 4153 stock code. Regardless of code, I'm still getting some harsh shifting (and downshifting) which seems to have progressed into what feels like a bit of slipping in 3rd and 4th gears. But, the dealer has always reported "No Problem Found" whenever I've asked them to look at it, including last week.

I have a number of things I'm working on with my dealer (more like demanding they at least take a hard look at, since they seem very unresponsive and incapable of finding things), and this is one of them. I'm thinking fluid and valve body, but if that doesn't fix what feels to me is the transmission slipping, it's probably gonna be tranny time.

If you ask me, VW does know that there is something anormal with their early transmissions, because they definitely changed something afterwards. Why no 2007 owners are complaining about their transmission ?
The answer can't be because they have less mileage on their vehicle, because on many 2004 and 2005 Touaregs this problem was stated already at low mileage, and any SW updates didn't cure completely the problem.

Vegas Matt,
when was your Touareg build ? I am currently collecting data until which production dates this trans issues are occuring.

fyi: the remanufactured transmission they installed in my Touareg last year, shows a production date of 210704 (21 July 2004). I guess this is the date of real "production" date, and not the remanufacturing date, because I doubt that they kept this transmission for 3 years somewhere on stock. At least it looked like brand new.
Was it by chance that they didn't put a transmission in with a later production date ?
Would be interesting to know how many transmission part numbers for V6/V8 transmissions exist already. Maybe GooziNZ or Spockcat can help out here.

Actually I'm starting to complain about my transmission...I'm getting harsh upshifts when the tranny is cold...also the occasional slow sirupy slippy shift between 1-2.

Seems to be around the same mileage as when my '04 started acting up..I've asked them to change the fluids for my upcoming service...we'll see...

Luzy, I believe my Touaregs build date is March 2005. I'll look at the trans for the code/date some evening (although it's kinda hot to be goofing around under a vehicle these days - 109 expected high today).

Also, read here for some more transmission info:

I have the impression that the torque converter clutch (TCC) is not activated (open, closed) as it should be. As in my case, many complaints are stating “harsh shifting at low speed and/or low load”. At this conditions I expect the torque converter clutch to be “open”.

Does somebody know if it possible to perform measurements (e.g. current/voltage) of the valves of the transmission valve body with VAG-COM ?

I found out that the valve N91 controls the ATF-pressure for the TCC and valve N89 improves the pressure on the TCC.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
